About our loft storage

Loft conversions are common in London terraces, and they leave awkward spaces: low eaves behind the knee wall, sloping ceilings and dormers with odd corners. Standard furniture doesn’t fit any of them. We build storage that does: cupboards and deep drawers in the knee wall, wardrobes that follow the slope with hanging where the ceiling is high, and shelving in and around dormers. We work in lofts that are already converted or boarded; the conversion itself, and anything to do with Building Regulations approval for it, is for your builder. At the design visit we measure the slopes and the eaves space, check what’s behind the knee wall, and talk through what you need to store. The storage is made in our workshop and fitted in the loft.

Why made for your room

Loft rooms are full of angles: low eaves, sloping ceilings and dormers. Standard furniture leaves most of that space empty. Storage made for the slopes uses the low space for drawers and cupboards and the tall space for hanging.

What we make

  • Using the low space in the eaves
  • Wardrobes under a sloping ceiling
  • Shelves in a dormer
  • Drawers in the knee wall
  • Storage that suits a converted loft bedroom

Materials and finishes

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Eaves doors and drawers
  • Sloped wardrobe tops

We work in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well; birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it suits long shelves, carcasses and drawer boxes. Finishes are spray painted in our workshop for a smooth, even surface, or hand painted, which is easy to touch up later. The colour is agreed with you.

How it works

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the loft room and its slopes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the slopes, eaves and dormers and check behind the knee wall.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards and drawers are made in our workshop, in sections that go up the loft stairs.
  5. We fit them in the loft and scribe them to the slopes.

Before the design visit

Before the design visit, check that the loft is converted or boarded and that any existing eaves doors open. Think about what you’ll store and whether the room is a bedroom, an office or both.

Things to know

Converted or boarded lofts only

We build storage in lofts that have already been converted or boarded. Converting a loft needs Building Regulations approval and is a job for a builder; we don’t do that work.

What’s behind the knee wall

Insulation, ventilation gaps and sometimes pipes or cables sit behind the knee wall. We check at the design visit so eaves storage doesn’t block ventilation or anything that needs access.

Getting it up the stairs

Loft stairs are often narrow and steep. The storage is made in sections sized to get up them and round the turns.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf loft storage?

Off-the-shelf furniture suits some rooms well. Where the room has awkward sizes, uneven walls or a lot to store, furniture made for the space usually works better. Here’s how the two compare.

What affects your quote

Every job is quoted for your room after the design visit, so we don’t publish prices. These are the things that shape the quote:

  • The size of the piece and how much of the wall or room it fills
  • How many doors and drawers there are, and what goes inside
  • The materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both
  • The finish: spray painted in our workshop or hand painted
  • The room itself: uneven walls, sloping ceilings, cornices, skirting and picture rails
  • Access: stairs, lifts, parking and getting the sections into the room

Read how it works for the whole process.

What your quote includes

After the design visit we send a written quote. It sets out:

  • What we’ll make, with the layout and sizes agreed at the design visit
  • The materials and the finish, including the paint colour
  • What goes inside: shelves, hanging, drawers and any special fittings
  • Fitting in your home
  • What isn’t included, such as electrics, plumbing, gas or decorating, which are for other trades
  • How and when the work will be done, and the payment terms

Looking after your loft storage

Paint needs time to cure fully after it’s applied, so treat new paintwork gently at first: avoid knocks, wipe spills promptly and don’t stand heavy or damp things on new surfaces. Clean with a soft, damp cloth and a mild cleaner rather than anything abrasive. Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up if they get marked, and hinged doors can be adjusted at the hinge if they drift out of line as a house moves with the seasons.

Loft storage: common questions

Do you convert lofts?

No. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. The conversion itself is for a builder.

Can you build a wardrobe under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. The wardrobe follows the slope, with full-height hanging where the ceiling is high and shelves or drawers lower down.

What can go in the eaves?

Cupboards with doors, or deep pull-out drawers that bring the contents out to you. Drawers are often easier to use in low eaves.

Can you build shelves in a dormer?

Yes. Shelving, a desk or a window seat can be built into or around a dormer.

Will the storage fit up our loft stairs?

We measure the stairs as well as the room, and make the storage in sections sized to fit.

Will eaves storage affect insulation or ventilation?

It shouldn’t. We check what’s behind the knee wall and plan the storage so ventilation gaps stay open.

Which parts of London do you cover?

We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London. See areas we cover.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Saturdays are available by arrangement. Let us know at the design visit if a Saturday suits you better.
