About loft storage in Southwark
The low space behind a knee wall is often the most useful in the room. Eaves cupboards and pull-out drawers built into the knee wall put it to work. Pull-out drawers mean you do not have to crawl in. At the design visit in Southwark, we will see what fits. We make eaves cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about no wardrobe that fits under the slope and boxes piled on loft boards.
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.
- You get in touch and describe the loft room, its slopes and any dormer.
- We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
- A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
- We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly.
What affects the price in Southwark
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Loft storage for homes across Southwark
Homes across Southwark range from period terraces to post-war blocks and newer flats, and each brings its own spaces to work with. Every piece is scribed to the wall and set level.
The biggest shares of homes in Southwark were built since 2000 (about 28%) and before 1919 (about 26%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 28% of homes in Southwark were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. In a newer house with a converted loft, the space under the slopes can be used. About 64% of households in Southwark live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. For a flat, eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and Southwark is part of that. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and go through the design.
East Dulwich: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Champion Lodge, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For an older house near The Latter Rain Outpouring Revival Church, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
For simple storage in a boarded loft, ready-made shelving can do the job. Bespoke work makes sense in a converted loft room, where the storage is part of the room. At the design visit, we will tell you honestly which approach suits your loft.
What to check before you book
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
What it’s made from
Birch plywood
Drawers in the knee wall can carry heavy things, from boxes to bedding. That’s why we make drawer boxes from birch plywood. It also suits long shelves.
Plinths and scribe strips
We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall and ceiling. They help the storage look as though it was always there. At floor level, the plinth hides any slope in the floor.
Practical tips
The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:
- Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
- Make a list of what you want to store in the eaves
- Find out what’s behind the eaves, from insulation to vents
- Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can
We open each door and run each drawer with you before we go. Any access to the eaves is checked so it still opens. You’ll know it all works as it should.
Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If something stops working smoothly, message us from the contact page and describe it.
What we don’t do
It is worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Converting the loft itself, which is not our work
- Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves
- Altering the structure of the loft
What it costs
A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:
- The internal fittings
- The number of doors and drawers
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
What to send when you contact us
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Your postcode and the borough
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
FAQs: loft storage in Southwark
Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?
It shouldn’t, if it is designed properly. We design eaves storage so it doesn’t block ventilation or squash insulation. If you have concerns about what’s already behind the eaves, it’s worth asking whoever converted the loft.
Do you make good the walls afterwards?
No. We do not plaster or decorate. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
Who chooses the colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
How long does it take to fit loft storage?
How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. The storage is made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We keep the route up to the loft as clear as possible.
Is the furniture made to order?
Everything is made at our workshop for your room, then brought to your home and fitted. It’s built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, use our contact form.
Can you convert my loft as well?
No. Our work is storage in loft rooms that are already converted, or in boarded lofts. Loft conversions are building work, with Building Regulations to follow. Once your loft is converted, we can design the storage.
