How we make loft storage for Islington

The space behind the knee wall normally has insulation and ventilation to think about. Storage shouldn’t block the ventilation or squash the insulation. If you have concerns about what’s behind the eaves, ask the people who did the conversion. When we visit in Islington, we will see what’s there. Typical reasons to get in touch are a boarded loft with no proper shelving and seasonal things cluttering the loft room, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about your converted or boarded loft.
  2. We visit to measure the eaves and slopes and talk through the design.
  3. You receive a written quote for the storage we have discussed, for you to look over.
  4. Your storage is made in our workshop and painted to your chosen colour. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and leave it ready to use.

How our quotes work

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It is useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Ask for a quote

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Fitted storage across Islington

In the flats and conversions around Islington, storage is often the thing people are shortest of. Well-planned eaves cupboards can add storage while keeping the room usable.

In Islington, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 44%) and the years since 2000 (about 19%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. More than a third of the homes in Islington (about 44%) were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Many older terraces have had loft conversions, leaving eaves spaces and slopes that suit fitted storage; we build storage once the loft is converted or boarded. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 24% of households in Islington, according to Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

We cover the whole of London, so homes in Islington are well within our area. If you’re unsure about access or parking, mention it when you get in touch.

Highbury: For a flat near Canonbury station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 2 miles east. If your own home is a period one, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

When you need someone else

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Approval for structural changes

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Practical tips

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
  • Choose a calm colour for the loft
  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are
  • Make room so the whole loft can be measured

Keep the ventilation behind the eaves clear. Leave the gaps we’ve designed in. It helps keep the loft in good order.

Keep the eaves ventilated and avoid pressing things against the back of the space. Insulation pressed flat does not do its job. Damp in the eaves is worth raising with the people who did the conversion.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Loft walls are rarely straight, and floors are often out of level. Ready-made pieces show the gaps. Our storage is scribed to the room and set level, so the lines look right.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Questions from Islington

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.

How do you get large pieces into a loft?

Measuring the route is part of the design visit. We size every section for the tightest turn, and then assembled in the loft.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
