Our loft storage across Hackney
A dormer can take shelves, a desk or a window seat. Their sides are often angled, and their walls rarely straight. Each piece is scribed to the dormer. It uses space that might otherwise be wasted. We will discuss the options in Hackney. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe and a loft room with too many jobs.
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- First we hear about the loft room and what you’d like to store.
- We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft.
- We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a quote in writing.
- Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. It is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you. Any hand painting is done in the loft.
How our quotes work
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.
Why work with us
- Edges scribed to follow your walls
- Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
- Made for your room, not a standard size
Starting with a design visit
The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.
What’s near Shoreditch
Our area takes in the homes around Virginia Primary School, St Leonard's Church and Hackney University Technical College and the streets around them. You’ll also find The Prince's School of Traditional Arts (a few minutes’ walk west), Former London Apprentice pub (close by, under half a mile north-west), Artillery Ground (0.5 miles south-west) and Bishopsgate Institute Special Collections and Archives (0.5 miles south). There’s a railway station in Shoreditch itself: Shoreditch High Street station. A little further out are Dennis Severs' House (under half a mile south) and Tower of London (1.2 miles south). Not far away are Tower Hill.
- Places of worship nearby include St Mary-at-Hill (1.1 miles south)
Tricky spaces in homes across Hackney
Across Hackney, flats and conversions rarely come with enough storage. Eaves cupboards can add it without taking over the room.
The biggest shares of homes in Hackney were built before 1919 (about 35%) and since 2000 (about 24%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Purpose-built flats are home to about 60% of households in Hackney, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day. Of the 20 places we have local pages for in Hackney, 7 have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.
The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules, so we plan access to your home in Hackney ahead of fitting day.
Shoreditch: For a family home near Virginia Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Leonard, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
With ready-made furniture, the colour is the maker’s choice. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, so it can match the walls and the woodwork.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
What prompts loft storage
A dormer can feel like wasted space. Built-in furniture in a dormer puts it to work. It adds storage without crowding the room.
People typically get in touch with us about things like these:
- A boarded loft with no proper shelving
- A loft room that still feels unfinished
- Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
- Nowhere to store bags and boxes
When you need someone else
Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:
- Adding or replacing insulation
- Any wiring, which needs an electrician
- Building Regulations approval for a conversion
Flats, blocks and rented homes
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases.
Your questions about loft storage in Hackney
Can you build a wardrobe under a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Bespoke wardrobes are made to the angle of the ceiling. The tall end takes hanging space, and the low end can hold shelves or drawers. It’s scribed to the slope and walls.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
Do I get to choose the colour?
The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. Plastering and decorating are not part of our work. The furniture itself is spray painted or hand painted.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Usually not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first.
How much does loft storage cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. It depends on how much storage you want, the shape of the room and the finish. To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll arrange a design visit.
