Our loft storage across Barking and Dagenham

A loft room can hold a great deal of storage, if the low spaces are used well. We design and make eaves cupboards, drawers in the knee walls, wardrobes under the slopes and shelves in dormers, each shaped to the room. In Barking and Dagenham, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. Most enquiries start with no wardrobe that fits under the slope and a dormer that isn’t being used; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

  1. You let us know about the loft room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and agree the layout and colour.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in the loft and check each door and drawer with you.
  6. Go easy on new paintwork while it cures; hand-painted surfaces are easy to touch up later.

How our quotes work

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Fitted storage across Barking and Dagenham

Homes across Barking and Dagenham are full of odd corners, from stair voids to loft eaves. Eaves cupboards are drawn up for the space you have, then built in our workshop and fitted.

About 50% of the homes in Barking and Dagenham went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 20% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. More than a third of the homes in Barking and Dagenham (about 50%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Loft conversions are common in houses of that age, and the eaves can take fitted storage. Terraced houses are home to about 42% of households in Barking and Dagenham, the 2021 Census shows. Many London terraces have converted lofts with eaves that can take storage; we build once the loft is converted or boarded.

Getting furniture into a London home takes planning, from narrow halls to lifts and parking, so the way in is measured along with the room.

Barking: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Eastbury Manor House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live near Mayesbrook Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes often don’t fit up narrow loft stairs. We make each piece in sections that fit up the stairs. That makes it possible to fit large pieces in a small loft.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job

What we don’t do

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Building Regulations approval for a conversion
  • Adding or replacing insulation
  • Altering the structure of the loft

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

An access door into the eaves can match the rest of the fronts. It opens wide, so you can still get into the eaves. The other fronts can be doors, drawers or both.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is smooth and even. It is done in our workshop before fitting. You choose the colour.

Could you do it yourself?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Your questions about loft storage in Barking and Dagenham

Will eaves storage block the ventilation?

It shouldn’t, if it’s designed properly. We design eaves storage so it does not block ventilation or squash insulation. For worries about existing insulation or vents, ask the people who did the conversion.

Will you paint the walls around the furniture?

No. Plastering and decorating are not part of our work. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Which materials go into your loft storage?

Our loft storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Both are stable, which matters in a loft room. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
