Loft storage across Enfield: what to expect

Loft stairs are often narrow and steep, with tight turns. We measure the route as well as the room, so every section made in our workshop fits up the stairs. It is part of the job for any loft room in Enfield. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about a new loft conversion that needs storage and needing storage in a loft office.

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the loft and the stairs up to it.
  2. At the design visit we plan the storage and measure the stairs, landings and loft doorway.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections small enough for the loft stairs.
  5. The sections go up the stairs, are assembled under the eaves and set level. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the loft.

What goes into your quote

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

Starting with a design visit

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, message us from the contact page and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Loft storage for homes across Enfield

Across Enfield, including Edmonton, Palmers Green and New Southgate, most homes have a corner or recess that could do more. That might be under the stairs, in a bay, along the hall or under the eaves of a converted loft. Eaves cupboards are designed for the space as it is.

The biggest shares of homes in Enfield were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 35%) and before 1919 (about 23%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Around a third of the homes in Enfield (about 35%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Many interwar houses have had their lofts converted, leaving sloping ceilings and eaves to use. 26 of the 26 places in Enfield with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.

Enfield is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. Let us know about access and parking when you first get in touch.

Edmonton: For a flat near Edmonton Green station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints' Church, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.

Looking after your furniture

Getting the most from loft storage starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Check the route up to the loft
  • Plan where the tall end of a wardrobe can go
  • Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can
  • Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the storage clean. Avoid scourers and harsh cleaners. The edges around handles are touched most.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If something stops working smoothly, use our contact form and describe it.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease.

What we do not do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Building Regulations approval for a conversion
  • Building work to turn a loft into a room
  • Adding or replacing insulation

What it costs

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The width and height of the space

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Before the design visit

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

It’s useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Questions we’re often asked

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not usually. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Can you build a wardrobe under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. A wardrobe made for the slope fits where a standard one cannot. Hanging goes where there is height, with shelves where it is low. It is scribed to the slope and walls.

Can you get furniture up narrow loft stairs?

Every piece is made in sections that fit up the stairs. We measure the way up not just the room. That way, even a large wardrobe can reach the loft.

Which materials go into your loft storage?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Stable materials suit a loft, where temperatures can vary. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?

Not when it is planned well. At the design visit we check what’s there and leave the space it needs. Insulation and ventilation work itself is not ours.
