Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about how we design, make and fit furniture in London homes.

Design visit and quotes

How do I get started?

Tell us about the room and what you’d like made. The easiest way is our contact form, where you can add photos of the space. We’ll then arrange a design visit.

What happens at the design visit?

We visit your home, measure the room and talk through the design: what you want to store, how the room is used, doors, layout and finish. We also look at the walls, floors and ceiling, and at access for fitting. See what happens at a design visit.

When do I get a quote?

After the design visit. We send a written quote that sets out the design, the materials and finish, what’s included and what isn’t.

Why don’t you show prices on the website?

Every piece is made for a particular room, so the size, the inside layout, the finish and the room itself all change the work involved. We quote after the design visit instead. See what affects the quote.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes. Photos of the room and the wall where the furniture will go help us prepare. You can add them to the contact form.

Making and fitting

Where is the furniture made?

In our workshop. It’s then brought to your home and fitted by us.

How do you deal with uneven walls and floors?

Period walls are rarely flat or square and floors are often out of level. We scribe the furniture to follow the wall and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. See fitting furniture to uneven walls and floors.

What happens on fitting day?

We bring the furniture in sections, put it together in the room, scribe it to the walls, fix it securely and fit the doors and drawers. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the job, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. See getting your room ready for fitting day.

Do you do electrics, plumbing or decorating?

No. We’re carpenters. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, plumbing for your plumber, gas for a Gas Safe registered engineer, and decorating for your decorator. We plan the furniture around their work.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Saturdays are available by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch or at the design visit.

Materials and finishes

What materials do you use?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well; birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits long shelves, carcasses and drawer boxes. See MDF vs plywood.

Spray painted or hand painted: what’s the difference?

Spray painting is done in our workshop and gives a smooth, even finish. Hand painting can be done on site and is easy to touch up later. Both use a paint colour agreed with you. See spray-painted vs hand-painted furniture.

Can I choose the colour?

Yes. The colour is agreed with you and set out in your quote.

How do I look after painted furniture?

Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat new paintwork gently at first. Clean with a soft, damp cloth and a mild cleaner. See looking after painted fitted furniture.

Flats, leaseholds and listed homes

Can you fit furniture in a flat with narrow stairs or a small lift?

Yes. The furniture is made in sections sized to get up the stairs, round the landings, into the lift and through the doors. We measure the route as well as the room. See fitted furniture in mansion block flats.

I live in a leasehold flat. Do I need permission?

Your lease may require your landlord’s consent for alterations, including fixing furniture to walls. Check your lease before work starts; we can’t advise on it. See fitted furniture in a leasehold flat.

My building has a concierge or booking rules for contractors. Is that a problem?

No, but tell us at the design visit. Many blocks have rules for booking lifts, entry and working hours, and it helps to plan around them.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a listed building?

Works inside a listed building that affect its character, such as removing original joinery or fixing into panelling, can need listed building consent. Check with your council’s conservation officer first. See listed buildings and conservation areas.

I live in a conservation area. Does that matter?

Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, but check with your council if you’re unsure.

Areas and parking

Which areas do you cover?

All 32 London boroughs and the City of London. See areas we cover.

Do you work outside London?

No. We work in London only.

What about parking for your van?

Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, and a van needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit. See parking for tradespeople in London.

Does the ULEZ or Congestion Charge affect anything?

The ULEZ covers all London boroughs and the Congestion Charge zone covers central London, including the whole City of London. They’re part of working in London, and we take access into account when we plan your job.
