About our fitted home offices

Working from a kitchen table or a standalone desk in the corner of a bedroom soon wears thin. A fitted home office gives you a proper place to work, with storage that lets you put everything away at the end of the day. We make built-in desks, shelving walls, filing drawers and cupboards for spare rooms, box rooms, alcoves, landings and loft rooms under the eaves. The desk height and depth suit you and your screens, and cable routes keep wires out of sight. If the room has to work as a guest room too, a desk can sit alongside a wall bed. At the design visit we measure the room, talk through how you work and what you need to store, and agree the layout and finish.

Why made for your room

A home office often has to fit into a room that does something else too: a spare bedroom, a corner of the living room or a landing. Furniture made for the space gives you a proper desk and storage without taking over the room, and lets you put work away at the end of the day.

What we make

  • A proper desk in a spare room or alcove
  • Somewhere to put papers away at the end of the day
  • Cables from the desk run out of sight
  • Shelving for books and files
  • Working under the eaves or on a landing

Materials and finishes

  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Built-in desks
  • Cable routes
  • Filing drawers

We work in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well; birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it suits long shelves, carcasses and drawer boxes. Finishes are spray painted in our workshop for a smooth, even surface, or hand painted, which is easy to touch up later. The colour is agreed with you.

How it works

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you work.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and talk through the desk, screens, storage and cables.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The desk and storage are made in our workshop.
  5. We fit them in your home, with cable routes ready for your equipment.

Before the design visit

Before the design visit, think about how you work: one screen or two, a printer, files, books, video calls. Note where the sockets are, and whether the room needs to work as a guest room as well.

Things to know

Desk height and depth

A desk for two screens needs more depth than one for a laptop. We plan the desk around your equipment and how you sit.

Cables and sockets

We build cable routes and openings into the desk and shelves. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician.

A room that does two jobs

A spare room can be an office and a guest room. A wall bed with a desk alongside, or cupboards that close over the work area, keep both uses workable.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf fitted home offices?

Off-the-shelf furniture suits some rooms well. Where the room has awkward sizes, uneven walls or a lot to store, furniture made for the space usually works better. Here’s how the two compare.

What affects your quote

Every job is quoted for your room after the design visit, so we don’t publish prices. These are the things that shape the quote:

  • The size of the piece and how much of the wall or room it fills
  • How many doors and drawers there are, and what goes inside
  • The materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both
  • The finish: spray painted in our workshop or hand painted
  • The room itself: uneven walls, sloping ceilings, cornices, skirting and picture rails
  • Access: stairs, lifts, parking and getting the sections into the room

Read how it works for the whole process.

What your quote includes

After the design visit we send a written quote. It sets out:

  • What we’ll make, with the layout and sizes agreed at the design visit
  • The materials and the finish, including the paint colour
  • What goes inside: shelves, hanging, drawers and any special fittings
  • Fitting in your home
  • What isn’t included, such as electrics, plumbing, gas or decorating, which are for other trades
  • How and when the work will be done, and the payment terms

Looking after your fitted home offices

Paint needs time to cure fully after it’s applied, so treat new paintwork gently at first: avoid knocks, wipe spills promptly and don’t stand heavy or damp things on new surfaces. Clean with a soft, damp cloth and a mild cleaner rather than anything abrasive. Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up if they get marked, and hinged doors can be adjusted at the hinge if they drift out of line as a house moves with the seasons.

Fitted home offices: common questions

Can you build a desk into an alcove?

Yes. An alcove desk with shelves above is a neat way to make a work area in a living room or bedroom.

Can you hide the cables?

Yes. We plan cable routes and openings in the desk so cables run out of sight. New sockets are for your electrician.

Can a home office go under the eaves?

Yes, in a converted loft. The desk sits where there’s headroom and storage fills the lower space under the slope.

Can you build a home office in a spare room that’s also for guests?

Yes. A desk can be built alongside a wall bed, or storage can close over the work area.

What storage can a home office include?

Shelving, cupboards, filing drawers and open shelves for books and files, planned around what you keep.

Can you match bookcases and the desk?

Yes. Desk, bookcases and cupboards are designed together and finished in the same colour.

Which parts of London do you cover?

We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London. See areas we cover.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Saturdays are available by arrangement. Let us know at the design visit if a Saturday suits you better.
