Loft storage in Tower Hamlets: how it works

Dormers are a natural place for shelving or a small desk. Their sides are often angled, and their walls rarely straight. We scribe the furniture to follow them. It uses space that might otherwise be wasted. At the design visit in Tower Hamlets, we’ll look at what fits. We make eaves cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs and a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe.

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the loft room, whether it is a converted room or a boarded space.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the slopes, the eaves and the way up, and discuss the design with you.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. You can ask us about any of it.
  4. We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, cut to the slope.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the doors and drawers checked with you.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Starting with a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Tricky spaces in homes across Tower Hamlets

Under the stairs, in the eaves, along a narrow hall or in a bay: homes across Tower Hamlets have lots of spaces that standard furniture cannot use. Each design is made to the space itself, then built in our workshop and fitted.

About 45% of the homes in Tower Hamlets went up since 2000, and about 20% between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. About 45% of homes in Tower Hamlets were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. In a newer house with a converted loft, the space under the slopes can be used; we build once the loft is converted or boarded. About 81% of households in Tower Hamlets live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and Tower Hamlets is part of that. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and discuss the design.

Whitechapel: For an older house near St Mary Matfelon, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. Mansion House, about 0.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the design visit.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

What affects the cost of loft storage

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • Parking near your home
  • How square the room is
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The number of doors and drawers

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Helping us understand the room

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes often do not fit up narrow loft stairs. Our storage is made in sections sized for the route. It means a full wardrobe can still reach the room.

What to check before you book

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

In a loft, stability matters, and moisture-resistant MDF is stable. It gives a smooth base for paint. It’s used for most of the visible parts.

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. It is applied in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once fitted.

Practical tips

Getting the most from loft storage starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Clear the knee-wall spaces before the design visit if you can
  • Let us know about parking at the design visit
  • Think about hanging space for a loft bedroom
  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are

When we have finished fitting, the cupboards and drawers are ready. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Keep tape and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.

Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly. A quick sort every so often helps. Keep the heaviest things near the floor.

Questions from Tower Hamlets

How long is the fitting for eaves storage?

How long fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Because everything is built in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We work tidily and keep the stairs and landing as clear as we can.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

What are your eaves cupboards made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Both are stable, which matters in a loft room. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Does eaves storage affect the insulation?

Not when it’s planned well. We look behind the knee wall at the design visit and plan the storage so air can still move. We don’t alter insulation or vents.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We’ll design around them.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
