About our fitted cupboards
Some of the most useful storage in a house goes in places nobody thinks of: a recess on the landing, the end of a hallway, a corner of a utility room or the wall around a boiler. Fitted cupboards make use of those spaces with doors, shelves, hanging and drawers sized for what they’ll hold. We build hallway and landing cupboards, utility and boot room storage, airing cupboards and boiler cupboards. A boiler needs the clearances and ventilation set out in its manufacturer’s instructions, and any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe registered engineer, so we design boiler cupboards around those rules. At the design visit we measure, check what needs access, and talk through the layout and finish.
Why made for your room
Recesses, corners and the space around a boiler are rarely a standard size. Cupboards made for them use the space fully, keep access where it’s needed and can match the doors and joinery already in your home.
What we make
- Storage in a hallway or on a landing
- Hiding a boiler while keeping access
- A utility or boot room that works
- Cupboards in awkward corners
- Storage for cleaning things, coats and bags

Materials and finishes
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Spray-painted finish
- Hand-painted finish
- Ventilated doors
- Adjustable shelves
We work in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well; birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it suits long shelves, carcasses and drawer boxes. Finishes are spray painted in our workshop for a smooth, even surface, or hand painted, which is easy to touch up later. The colour is agreed with you.
How it works
- You get in touch and tell us where the cupboard will go and what it will hold.
- At the design visit we measure the space and note boilers, pipes, meters or anything that needs access.
- We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
- The cupboards are made in our workshop.
- We fit them in your home and scribe them to the walls, floor and ceiling.
Before the design visit
Before the design visit, think about what the cupboard will hold. If it’s for a boiler, have the boiler’s make and model to hand so the clearances in its manufacturer’s instructions can be checked.
Things to know
Boiler cupboards
Boilers need the clearances and ventilation set out in the manufacturer’s instructions, and engineers need to get at them. We plan the cupboard around that. Any work on the boiler is for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Utility and boot rooms
Coats, boots, bags and cleaning things all need different storage. Hooks, open shelves and a bench can sit alongside closed cupboards. Plumbing for washing machines is for your plumber.
Matching the house
In a period house, cupboard doors can be panelled to suit the existing doors; in a newer flat, flat doors often suit better. The colour is agreed with you.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf fitted cupboards?
Off-the-shelf furniture suits some rooms well. Where the room has awkward sizes, uneven walls or a lot to store, furniture made for the space usually works better. Here’s how the two compare.
| Made for your room | Off-the-shelf | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Made for your room, to the ceiling and wall to wall | Set widths and heights, with gaps or fillers |
| Uneven walls | Scribed to follow the wall and set level | Gaps where the wall bows or the floor slopes |
| Awkward spaces | Alcoves, slopes, bays and stairs used fully | Standard boxes that leave space unused |
| Inside layout | Planned around what you store | A set choice of rails and shelves |
| Finish | Spray or hand painted in a colour agreed with you | The colours in the range |
| Getting it in | Made in sections sized for your stairs and doors | Flat-pack boxes you or a fitter assemble |
What affects your quote
Every job is quoted for your room after the design visit, so we don’t publish prices. These are the things that shape the quote:
- The size of the piece and how much of the wall or room it fills
- How many doors and drawers there are, and what goes inside
- The materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both
- The finish: spray painted in our workshop or hand painted
- The room itself: uneven walls, sloping ceilings, cornices, skirting and picture rails
- Access: stairs, lifts, parking and getting the sections into the room
Read how it works for the whole process.
What your quote includes
After the design visit we send a written quote. It sets out:
- What we’ll make, with the layout and sizes agreed at the design visit
- The materials and the finish, including the paint colour
- What goes inside: shelves, hanging, drawers and any special fittings
- Fitting in your home
- What isn’t included, such as electrics, plumbing, gas or decorating, which are for other trades
- How and when the work will be done, and the payment terms
Looking after your fitted cupboards
Paint needs time to cure fully after it’s applied, so treat new paintwork gently at first: avoid knocks, wipe spills promptly and don’t stand heavy or damp things on new surfaces. Clean with a soft, damp cloth and a mild cleaner rather than anything abrasive. Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up if they get marked, and hinged doors can be adjusted at the hinge if they drift out of line as a house moves with the seasons.
Fitted cupboards: common questions
Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?
Yes, keeping the clearances and ventilation the manufacturer asks for and leaving engineers access. Any boiler work is for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Can you build cupboards on a landing?
Yes. A recess or the end of a landing often takes a shallow cupboard for linen or cleaning things.
Can you fit out a utility room?
Yes, with cupboards, shelves and hanging. Plumbing for appliances is for your plumber.
Can a hallway cupboard hold coats and shoes?
Yes. Hanging, hooks and shoe shelves can all go in one hallway cupboard.
Do the cupboards need ventilation?
Some do. Boiler and airing cupboards, and cupboards on external walls, are planned with ventilation in mind.
Can you match existing doors?
We can design panelled or flat doors to suit the doors and joinery already in your home.
