How we make loft storage for Camden

Many loft rooms are bedrooms, and storage for clothes is the first need. Wardrobes under the slope, drawers in the knee wall and shelves in the dormer can all work together. Designed as one, they give the room calm, consistent lines. We design them around what you need to store in Camden. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe and wasted space behind the knee walls.

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the loft and the storage you want is enough.
  2. We visit to measure the slopes and eaves and talk through cupboards, drawers and wardrobes under them.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
  5. We fit the storage in the loft, trimming the edges so they meet the ceiling neatly, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Local landmarks in St Pancras

Our area takes in the homes around Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School, Lumen United Reformed Church and Pilsudski Institute of London and the streets around them. You’ll also find Lincoln's Inn Fields (0.7 miles south), St George the Martyr Church of England Primary School (close by, under half a mile south), City Academy (within half a mile south-east) and Calthorpe Arms Public House (a few minutes’ walk south-east). The closest station to St Pancras is London Kings Cross station, about 0.5 miles north-west. A little further out are Foundling Museum (under half a mile west) and Montfichet's Tower (1.1 miles south-east). Not far away are Barnsbury Wood and Ludgate Hill.

Tricky spaces in homes across Camden

Camden has homes of every age, St Pancras, Hampstead and West End included, and each brings its own spaces to work with. Every piece is scribed to the wall and set level, so everything looks straight even where the room is not.

Homes built before 1919 make up about 49% of the housing in Camden, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for eaves cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. More than a third of the homes in Camden (about 49%) were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Many older terraces have had loft conversions, leaving eaves spaces and slopes that suit fitted storage; we build storage once the loft is converted or boarded. About 28% of households in Camden live in flats in converted or shared houses, according to Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

Getting furniture into a London home takes planning, from narrow halls to lifts and parking, so we look at both at the design visit.

St Pancras: The wider area includes historic houses like Dr Johnson's House, about 0.9 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even. Living in a block of flats near London Kings Cross station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Pricing loft storage in Camden

The price for your room depends on:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How big the furniture is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What we need to know

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What the furniture needs to hold

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.

What prompts loft storage

A dormer can feel like wasted space. Shelves, a desk or a seat in the dormer make it useful. It uses space that is otherwise empty.

Loft storage can help with:

  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • Needing storage in a loft office
  • A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised
  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the design visit.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising at the design visit.

Bespoke loft storage or ready-made?

A ready-made cupboard pushed into the eaves can block airflow. We plan the storage around what’s behind the knee wall. It helps keep the space in good order.

What to check before you book

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Questions we are often asked

What do eaves cupboards cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The size of the room, the amount of storage and the finish all shape the price. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How long is the fitting for eaves storage?

The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Every part is made at our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Will eaves storage block the ventilation?

It shouldn’t, if it is designed properly. We design eaves storage so it does not block ventilation or squash insulation. For worries about existing insulation or vents, ask the people who did the conversion.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.

Do you work outside London?

No. We only take on work in London.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Can a wardrobe follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. A wardrobe made for the slope fits where a standard one cannot. Hanging goes where there’s height, with shelves where it’s low. It is cut to fit the ceiling and walls exactly.
