Fitted wardrobes across Richmond upon Thames: what to expect
Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. Others work around a window. The layout is planned so the room doesn’t feel boxed in. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about wardrobes that are full to bursting and mismatched bedroom furniture.
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
- We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
- The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
- We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
How our quotes work
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Fitted wardrobes across Richmond upon Thames: local notes
Across Richmond upon Thames, including Twickenham, Richmond and Teddington, bedrooms come in every size. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. Hanging, shelves and drawers inside are arranged around what you store.
Homes built before 1919 make up about 38% of the housing in Richmond upon Thames, with about 24% built between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Of the 19 places we have local pages for in Richmond upon Thames, 9 have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.
Getting furniture into a London home takes planning, from narrow halls to lifts and parking, so the way in is measured along with the room.
Twickenham: If you live near Marble Hill Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. Richmond House, about 0.5 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes
To work out the quote, we look at:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- How many doors and drawers there are
- The width and height of the space
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.
Helping us understand the room
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it helps to send:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling, so the space is used and there’s nowhere for dust to collect on top.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
Flats, conversions and lettings
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the design visit.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Could you do it yourself?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Honest limits
We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Decorating or plastering the room
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Richmond upon Thames
How do I get a quote for fitted wardrobes in Richmond upon Thames?
The first step is to send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
The fitting depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The wardrobes are made in our workshop first before we come to fit them.
Will you paint the walls around the furniture?
No. Plastering and decorating aren’t part of our work. The furniture itself is spray painted or hand painted.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.
