About TV and media units in Hackney

TV units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We work across London, including Hackney. Most enquiries start with games, controllers and remotes everywhere and set-top boxes stacked on a stand; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You send us some details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use, including the size of the screen.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it helps to have them in mind early.
  3. We send a written quote for the unit.
  4. We make the cupboards, shelves and panels in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

Quotes in Hackney

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

Why householders in Hackney choose us

  • We visit, measure and discuss the design before we quote
  • Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight
  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • We work across all London boroughs

Starting with a design visit

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Around Shoreditch

We fit furniture in homes around Virginia Primary School, St Leonard's Church and Hackney University Technical College, among other places. Other local landmarks include The Prince's School of Traditional Arts (close by, under half a mile west), Former London Apprentice pub (close by, under half a mile north-west), Artillery Ground (0.5 miles south-west) and Bishopsgate Institute Special Collections and Archives (0.5 miles south). There is a railway station in Shoreditch itself: Shoreditch High Street station. Well-known places in the area include Dennis Severs' House (less than half a mile south) and Tower of London (1.2 miles south). Open spaces near Shoreditch include Tower Hill.

  • Places of worship nearby include St Mary-at-Hill (1.1 miles south)

Living-room carpentry across Hackney

From Shoreditch, Hoxton and Homerton to the quieter streets, homes across Hackney range from period terraces to modern flats. Period rooms tend to have alcoves for TV and media units, while newer rooms suit a full wall of shelving and cupboards. Every piece is made for the room it is going into.

Homes built before 1919 make up about 35% of the housing in Hackney, with about 24% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Purpose-built flats are home to about 60% of households in Hackney, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day. Of the 20 places we have local pages for in Hackney, 7 have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.

Our area covers the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City, Hackney included. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and go through the design.

Shoreditch: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Leonard, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. Mansion House, about 1 mile south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Check where the seating will go
  • Measure your TV, or the size you expect to buy next
  • Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
  • Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes

Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. At first, lift boxes and speakers into place rather than pushing them.

Tag each lead at both ends.

What prompts TV and media units

A new, larger TV often prompts it. The old stand looks too small, or the screen dominates the wall. Shelves and cupboards around the screen make it sit better in the room.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A big screen that dominates the wall
  • Speakers muffled behind doors
  • Leads that show from every angle
  • A TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall

Flats, leases and landlords

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

What it is made from

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth raises the unit and hides a sloping floor. It can line up with the skirting.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting is done in the workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.

Common questions about TV and media units

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. We only take on work in London.

How do I get a quote?

Simply fill in our short enquiry form. It’s useful to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

It depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

Each piece is made in our workshop for the room it’s going into, then brought to your home and fitted. It is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?

Where the TV is to be wall-mounted, we plan the unit around the bracket and the cable route behind it. The wall needs to be sound for the bracket.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Who moves the sockets for a built-in TV wall?

Your electrician does that. It’s best done before the unit goes in and we design the cable routes around the sockets.
