Fitted Wardrobes in Hackney

Fitted wardrobes across Hackney: what to expect

Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it. Most enquiries start with space under the eaves going to waste and not enough hanging space; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

What goes into your quote

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Homes across Hackney and their bedrooms

Across Hackney, from Shoreditch, Hoxton and Homerton outwards, we design and fit fitted wardrobes. External walls can be colder than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

In Hackney, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 35%) and the years since 2000 (about 24%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 60% of households in Hackney live in purpose-built flats, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day. Of the 20 places we have local pages for in Hackney, 7 have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.

We make fitted furniture for every kind of home in Hackney, from Victorian terraces to new-build flats. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.

Shoreditch: Living in a block of flats near Shoreditch High Street station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live in a period home close to St Leonard's Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting lets you judge the colour in the room as it goes on. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.

Doors and drawer fronts

Hinged doors suit rooms with space in front. Sliding doors suit narrow rooms.

When you need someone else

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
  • Treating damp or mould on the walls

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Before and after fitting day

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Tell us which walls face outside
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
  • Let us know about the lift and stairs in your block

Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that’s barely damp. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can mark the finish.

Let doors close gently rather than slamming. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Large flat-pack wardrobes can be hard to build in a small bedroom. We make fitted wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Do you work outside London?

No. We cover London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It makes good use of space that’s hard to furnish.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.

Do you do plastering or decorating?

No. We do not plaster or decorate. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a quote in writing once we have measured up.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.
