About bespoke kitchens in Hackney
You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and we design the cabinets around them. Knowing the appliance sizes early lets us leave the right spaces, from the oven housing to the dishwasher. Your quote sets out the materials and finish. We make kitchens from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a larder for food and small appliances and a kitchen for a room that isn’t square.
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.
- We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold.
- We visit to measure and go through the design and storage. We note where the water, gas and sockets are now.
- A quote follows, covering the design and finish, ready for you to check.
- The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe engineer handle the services. We do not arrange these trades ourselves.
What affects the price in Hackney
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

Bespoke kitchens for homes across Hackney
In older homes across Hackney, kitchens are often in a back addition with walls that are far from square. Cabinets are scribed to those walls and levelled on site. Plumbing, gas and electrics are handled by other trades.
About 35% of the homes in Hackney went up before 1919, and about 24% since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. About 60% of households in Hackney live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early. 7 of the 20 places in Hackney with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.
Getting furniture into a London home takes planning, from narrow halls to lifts and parking, so we look at both at the measuring visit.
Shoreditch: If your home is one of the older houses near St Leonard's Church, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. Near listed buildings like Church of St Leonard, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Shoreditch, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.
Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?
Neither choice is right for every home. If the room is square and the budget is tight, a ready-made kitchen may do the job. For period homes, tricky rooms or a painted look, bespoke tends to earn its place.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
Tips worth knowing
Getting the most from bespoke kitchens starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Give the paint time to cure fully
- Choose your appliances before the design is final
- Deal with damp walls first
- Let us know about parking at the measuring visit
Follow the appliance makers’ guidance for your oven, hob and dishwasher, and the care advice for your worktop.
Line up your other trades in good time. Their work and ours need to fit together, so it helps if everyone knows the plan.
What affects the price in Hackney
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:
- The number of doors and drawers
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- The internal fittings
We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
What we need to know
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and let us know which room you have in mind. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.
Materials and finishes
Moisture-resistant MDF
For painted cabinet fronts, moisture-resistant MDF is our usual choice, because it stays flat.
Plinths and scribe strips
A plinth hides adjustable feet and lets the cabinets sit level. Scribe strips close the gap to a wall that isn’t straight.
When is bespoke worth it?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Questions we are often asked
What if the stairs or lift are small?
The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route as well as the room. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.
Do you cover areas outside London?
No. Our work is in London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we’ll see what we can do.
How much time does fitting need?
It depends on the kitchen. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you can plan your other trades around it.
Will you paint the walls around the furniture?
No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. The furniture itself is spray painted or hand painted.
Is the furniture made to order?
It is made at our workshop, to the sizes taken at the design visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.
What does a bespoke kitchen cost?
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, layout and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.
