Our built-in bookshelves across Hackney
Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. Most enquiries start with shelving behind a desk for books and files and storage for children’s books and games, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
- We come to measure and discuss the design.
- We send a quote in writing.
- We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray finish is applied there too, if you chose it.
- We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it’s best to load the shelves gently at first.
How our quotes work
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Built-in bookshelves for homes across Hackney
If you’re in one of the older streets of Hackney, expect walls that lean and floors that dip, and built-in bookshelves are scribed to them on site. In newer homes across Hackney, the challenge is more often a plasterboard wall, which needs the right fixings.
In Hackney, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 35%) and the years since 2000 (about 24%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. Purpose-built flats are home to about 60% of households in Hackney, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day. Of the 20 places we have local pages for in Hackney, 7 have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.
Our area covers the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City, Hackney included. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and go through the design.
Shoreditch: If you live near Artillery Ground, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. For a flat near Shoreditch High Street station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
When you need someone else
It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job
- Plumbing work around the shelves
- Knocking through or altering walls
Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?
Tall standalone bookcases still need fixing to the wall, so it is already halfway to built in. What changes is the fit, the shelf strength and the finish.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- A written quote that sets out the job
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Where they’ll park and unload
Flats, leases and landlords
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
Why people ask for built-in bookshelves in Hackney
Often, the books simply have nowhere left to go. Piles on the floor and double rows on the shelves are a familiar sign. A built-in bookcase uses a whole wall.
If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:
- A bare wall above a doorway
- Shelves that suit a period room
- Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
- Room for a record collection
Before and after fitting day
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Mention parking and stairs when we visit
- Consider a mix of fixed and adjustable shelves
- Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting
- Mention anything very heavy, like records or large art books
Paint is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, place books gently rather than sliding them along.
Keep heavy things on low shelves, and never climb the shelves to reach the top.
Questions from Hackney
Is the furniture made to order?
Everything is built in our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. It is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Should I send pictures?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. The furniture itself is spray painted or hand painted.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
Will built-in bookshelves sag?
Whether a shelf sags depends on how long it is and what it carries. We size the shelves and use birch plywood where strength matters, with supports or shorter bays on long runs. Spreading heavy books helps too.
How do I get a quote?
The first step is to use our contact form. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.
How do you decide on shelf depth?
We set the depth to suit what you own. Another option is deeper storage below and shallower shelves above, and it keeps paperbacks from getting lost at the back.
