Our fitted cupboards across Hackney
Meters and fuse boards often sit in the most tricky places, under the stairs, in a hallway or beside the front door. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly and still keeps access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. Typical reasons to get in touch are a cupboard for the meters with easy access and tall cupboards where space is short, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You get in touch with a few details about the space. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
- The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
- A quote in writing is sent to you.
- Everything is made at our workshop.
- We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.
What goes into your quote
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Why work with us
- Every quote follows a design visit
- Workshop-made and fitted by us
- More than 300 projects completed

Arranging a design visit
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To share them, use our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Fitted storage across Hackney
Across Hackney, flats and conversions rarely come with enough storage. Well-planned fitted cupboards can add storage while keeping the room usable, with sections sized for the stairs and lift.
Homes built before 1919 make up about 35% of the housing in Hackney, with about 24% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. About 60% of households in Hackney live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. For a flat, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day. 7 of the 20 places in Hackney with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.
In London, the route into a home matters as much as the room, so the way in is measured along with the room.
Shoreditch: If you live near Artillery Ground, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For families living near Virginia Primary School, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.
What prompts fitted cupboards
Others want their cupboards to match the rest of the house. We can design doors that suit the style of the house, so the cupboard looks as if it belongs.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat
- A utility room with proper storage
- Storage in a corner nothing else fits
- Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
What it costs
Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Doors and drawers, and how many
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Getting in touch
To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- The type of home and how the room is reached
A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.
Boards, parts and paint
Doors and drawer fronts
We make doors in a style that suits the room, painted to match the cupboard. Drawers below the doors suit shoes and small items.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface. You choose the colour.
Flats, conversions and lettings
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.
FAQs: fitted cupboards in Hackney
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Normally not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
Getting it in is planned during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?
Yes. We design the cupboard to keep the clearances and ventilation set out in the boiler maker’s instructions, and the doors open fully for servicing. Any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
How long does fitting take?
Every job is different. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.
Do I choose the paint colour?
The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
Can you fit cupboards to walls that are not straight?
Yes. We scribe each cupboard to follow the wall and levelled with a plinth or adjustable feet. That’s one of the main reasons to choose fitted cupboards in an older house.
