Fitted cupboards in Hillingdon: how it works
Meters and fuse boards often sit in the most tricky places, under the stairs, in a hallway or beside the front door. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly, while keeping them easy to reach. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are boxing in a boiler with room for servicing and storage for towels and bedding.
You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.
- To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the space and anything in it that needs access is plenty.
- We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach.
- You receive a quote in writing for the cupboards.
- We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with vents and access panels where they’re needed.
- The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.
What goes into your quote
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Tricky spaces in homes across Hillingdon
Homes across Hillingdon are full of odd corners, from stair voids to loft eaves. Fitted cupboards are drawn up for the space you have, then made in our workshop and fitted.
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 37% of the housing in Hillingdon, with about 25% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. Around a third of the homes in Hillingdon (about 37%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses of that era often have a hallway wide enough for a coat and shoe cupboard, and a box room that can take more storage. About 25% of homes in Hillingdon were built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Post-war homes often have fewer nooks than older houses, so fitted cupboards add storage that was never built in, with fixings chosen for the wall.
Hillingdon is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. Tell us about access and parking when you first get in touch.
Ruislip: The wider area includes historic houses such as Ickenham Hall, about 1.7 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Lady Bankes School, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Practical tips
None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:
- Point out anything that needs access
- Deal with any damp walls first
- Leaseholders: check your lease first
- Go easy on new doors for a while
Once the cupboards are fitted, the paint needs time to cure fully. At first, go easy on the doors and shelves and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth only. In time, a damp cloth and a little mild soap keeps them clean.
Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease first. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building, and it’s best done early.
Could you do it yourself?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Many off-the-shelf units use chipboard with a printed surface. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in a colour you choose, finished to suit the room.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- How doors and drawers are fitted
How we price fitted cupboards
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:
- How square the room is
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- How many doors and drawers there are
- The width and height of the space
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
What to send when you get in touch
These details help when you contact us:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the design visit.
Questions we are often asked
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.
Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?
Yes, while keeping access clear. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so we design doors or removable panels for that.
How much does a fitted cupboard cost?
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?
Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, with doors that open wide for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a quote in writing follows.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
Do you fit out utility rooms and boot rooms?
Yes. We build tall cupboards, shelves and spaces for the appliances you choose. Plumbing is for your plumber and electrics for your electrician, and we plan the cupboards around their work.
