Our fitted cupboards across Southwark
A fitted cupboard is built for one space and nowhere else. It can rise to the ceiling or stop at a height that suits the room, and it follows the walls rather than leaving gaps around them. Hallways, landings, utility rooms, boot rooms and alcoves all make good homes for one, with the inside planned around what you want to store. Most enquiries start with somewhere for coats, shoes and bags and hiding meters and a fuse board neatly; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- You get in touch with a few details about the space.
- We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
- You receive a quote in writing.
- The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.
How our quotes work
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Ask for a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Awkward spaces in homes across Southwark
In the flats and conversions around Southwark, storage is often the thing people are shortest of. Fitted cupboards can add it without taking over the room.
In Southwark, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 28%) and before 1919 (about 26%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. About 28% of homes in Southwark were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Newer homes often have little built-in storage, and their walls are normally plasterboard on studs, so fitted cupboards are designed with fixings to suit. Purpose-built flats are home to about 64% of households in Southwark, based on Census 2021. For a flat, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
Homes across Southwark range from period terraces to modern blocks, and we work in all of them. The process is the same wherever you are: a design visit, a quote in writing, then making and fitting.
East Dulwich: Near listed buildings like Champion Lodge, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of East Dulwich, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If your home is one of the older houses near The Latter Rain Outpouring Revival Church, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves.
Honest limits
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:
- Building work or structural changes
- Wiring for lights or sockets
- Plumbing for washing machines or sinks (your plumber)
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Many off-the-shelf units use chipboard with a printed surface. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in a colour you choose, so the finish can match the room.
What to check before you book
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
Flats, leases and landlords
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.
What it costs
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It is useful to talk about parking during the design visit.
Helping us understand the room
Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- The type of home and how the room is reached
To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and a quote in writing follows.
Questions from Southwark
Can you build cupboards for a boot room?
Yes. We build tall cupboards, shelves and spaces for the appliances you choose. Plumbing is for your plumber and electrics for your electrician, and we plan the cupboards around their work.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
How much time does fitting need?
It depends on the job. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you’ll know before we start.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on your lease, so check it or ask your managing agent.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?
Yes. We design the cupboard to keep the clearances and ventilation set out in the boiler maker’s instructions, and the doors open fully for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for a Gas Safe engineer.
