Fitted cupboards in Islington: how it works

A utility or boot room has to work hard, every day. We can build tall cupboards for the vacuum, ironing board and mop, with housing for a washing machine or tumble dryer where you want it. Your plumber connects the appliances and your electrician handles any sockets, so we plan the cupboards around their work. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about a neat cupboard around the boiler and somewhere for coats, shoes and bags.

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the space. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
  3. You receive a quote in writing.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.

What goes into your quote

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What’s near Highbury

Around Highbury, we cover homes near Musical Theatre Academy, The Snooty Fox pub and Highbury Quadrant Primary School. Other local landmarks include Highbury Fields (a few minutes’ walk south-west), Christ Church (less than half a mile north-west) and City of London Academy Highbury Grove (less than half a mile south). There is a railway station in Highbury itself: Canonbury station. Well-known places in the area include Arsenal Football Club Museum (0.6 miles north-west) and Hackney Walk (2 miles east). For a walk, there is Gillespie Park.

Tricky spaces in homes across Islington

Homes across Islington are full of odd corners, from stair voids to loft eaves. Fitted cupboards are drawn up for the space you have, then made in our workshop and fitted.

In Islington, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 44%) and the years since 2000 (about 19%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. More than a third of the homes in Islington (about 44%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Older homes tend to have tricky recesses and uneven walls, which is where fitted cupboards help, with each one scribed to the wall. About 24% of households in Islington live in flats in converted or shared houses, the 2021 Census shows. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping, so access to homes in Islington is planned beforehand.

Highbury: If your children go to Highbury Quadrant Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If you live near Highbury Fields, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Pricing fitted cupboards in Islington

The price for your room depends on:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The width and height of the space
  • The internal fittings
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Helping us understand the room

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Bespoke fitted cupboards or ready-made?

Ready-made cupboards are normally made from chipboard with a printed or plastic finish. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in a colour you choose, finished to suit the room.

What to check before you book

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

Boards, parts and paint

Doors and drawer fronts

In a narrow hallway, the way doors open matters, so the doors clear the walls and stairs.

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, which matters for long shelves and drawer boxes. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Could you do it yourself?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How long will the cupboards take to fit?

It depends on the job. The time the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Can you box in my boiler with a fitted cupboard?

Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and keep access clear for the engineer.

Do you fit out utility rooms and boot rooms?

Yes, we plan the room around what needs storing such as boots, coats, laundry and the vacuum. Plumbing and electrics are for your plumber and electrician.

Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?

Yes, that is part of the job. Few walls in a period house are straight, so we scribe and level every cupboard.

How are fitted cupboards priced?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A small boiler cupboard and a full run of hallway storage are very different jobs, so we quote once we have seen the space. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form.
