Window Seats in Haringey

From one end of Haringey to the other, we can design, make and fit window seats. Every job starts with a design visit, then a written quote.

Window Seats in Haringey

About window seats in Haringey

Plenty of period homes across London have sash windows. Under a sash, the seat is set below the cill so the window can still be used. Where there are working shutters, the seat must leave room for them to fold back. These details are measured when we visit your home in Haringey. Most enquiries start with off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window and unused space below a sash window; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You get in touch about a window seat.
  2. At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
  4. The seat is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home, and a hand-painted finish is applied in the room.
  6. Give new paintwork gentle use while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Quotes in Haringey

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote.

How to get a quote

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Window seats for homes across Haringey

We make window seats for homes across Haringey, in Tottenham, Noel Park and Wood Green and beyond. Any meters, fuse board or boiler keep the access they need. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

The biggest shares of homes in Haringey were built before 1919 (about 54%) and since 2000 (about 13%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 54% of homes in Haringey were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age, and they’re natural places for a window seat. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 24% of households in Haringey, the 2021 Census shows. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Haringey is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. If you’re unsure about access or parking, mention it when you get in touch.

Tottenham: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Tower to South West of Bruce Castle, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a family home near The Mulberry Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Pricing window seats in Haringey

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The overall size of the piece

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit.

Getting in touch

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • How you want to use the space

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Could you do it yourself?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Do you need window seats?

In a period home, a window seat can suit the character of the room. Painted to suit the room, it can sit with the original features. That appeals to people restoring or updating an older home.

Window seats can help with:

  • Wanting a quiet place to read
  • A radiator under the window getting in the way
  • Standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay
  • No space for toys and games

Flats, leases and landlords

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you contact us.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it during the design visit.

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

Where there’s a radiator, part of the front is a grille. It’s painted to match the other fronts. Around it, the fronts can be drawers, doors or panels.

Lift-up lids

Lift-up lids are a simple way to add storage under a seat. Any cushion has to come off before the lid can lift, so it suits things you reach for now and then.

Common questions about window seats

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

What does a bespoke window seat cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A bay with angled sides involves more work than a straight recess, and drawers more than a lid. Everything is set out in a quote in writing after the visit.

Is the cushion included with the window seat?

We make and fit the seat, but cushions aren’t something we supply. The seat is designed for a cushion of the thickness you plan. You’ll have the seat size to hand.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.

How long does it take to fit a window seat?

How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Every part is made at our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Can a window seat go over the radiator?

Yes. We build a grille or an open front into the seat so the heat isn’t trapped. We also leave space around the radiator. Moving the radiator is for your plumber, if you’d prefer it elsewhere.
