Walk-in wardrobes in Haringey: how it works

You can have doors, open storage or a mix. Doors keep dust off and give a calm look, while open storage lets you see everything at once. The choice is yours, and we will go through it when we measure. We make walk-in wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about proper shoe storage and setting aside a corner of a large bedroom.

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling at several points, as few rooms are truly square.
  3. You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the walk-in wardrobe in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each unit is levelled and scribed to follow the walls.
  6. We check everything with you, and fresh paint should be treated gently at first.

How our quotes work

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

Arranging a design visit

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

We fit furniture in homes around Northumberland Park Community School, No.8 Tottenham pub and Bruce Castle Park and the streets around them. Other local landmarks include The John Loughborough School (close by, under half a mile south), Church of St Mary the Virgin (under half a mile north-east) and The Mulberry Primary School (a few minutes’ walk south-east). Tottenham has its own railway station: Bruce Grove station. A little further out are Markfield Beam Engine and Museum (1.1 miles south) and North Middlesex University Hospital (1.1 miles north).

Homes across Haringey and their bedrooms

Across Haringey, bedrooms range from period rooms with high ceilings to compact rooms in newer blocks. The design follows the room, not a catalogue, with the inside laid out around what you keep.

In Haringey, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 54%) and the years since 2000 (about 13%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. More than half of the homes in Haringey (about 54%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses of that age often have a small back bedroom or box room that can become a walk-in wardrobe. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 24% of households in Haringey, according to Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Getting furniture into a London home takes planning, from narrow halls to lifts and parking, so we look at both at the measuring visit.

Tottenham: If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Mary the Virgin, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. If your children go to The Mulberry Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Where other trades come in

Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • Curing damp in the walls
  • Making good walls and ceilings

What it is made from

Hanging rails

Long hanging is kept for coats and dresses, with double hanging elsewhere.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well for a clean, even look.

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?

Standard systems come in set widths and heights, so the space above and at the ends is often wasted. A bespoke design can run to the ceiling and fill the walls, which can add a lot of storage.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How big the furniture is

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Before the design visit

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • How you want to use the space
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.

Questions we’re often asked

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.

How long will the walk-in wardrobe take to fit?

Every room is different. The time the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

It is made in sections, sized for the route along with the room itself. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it is set out in the quote.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on.
