How we make built-in bookshelves for Haringey

Shelving near a radiator needs some thought. Heat has to rise and move into the room, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Some people prefer to keep the shelves clear of the radiator altogether. Most enquiries start with storage for children’s books and games and wasted wall space around a door or window, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You contact us about shelving around a door, a window or a chimney breast.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.

Quotes in Haringey

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

Living-room carpentry across Haringey

We make built-in bookshelves for homes across Haringey, in Tottenham, Noel Park and Wood Green and beyond. Walls could be solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so fixings are chosen for each. Shelf spans and depths are chosen so nothing bows.

The biggest shares of homes in Haringey were built before 1919 (about 54%) and since 2000 (about 13%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. More than half of the homes in Haringey (about 54%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses of that age usually have alcoves, tall ceilings and picture rails, all of which shelving can use. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 24% of households in Haringey, based on Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Controlled parking zones cover large parts of London, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges. Let us know about parking at the design visit.

Tottenham: The wider area includes historic houses like Bruce Castle, about 0.3 miles west. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. If you live near Bruce Castle Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them straight away. They also come with you when you move. Built-in shelves stay with the house and are made for its walls.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight

Where other trades come in

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Plumbing work around the shelves
  • Decorating the rest of the room
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls during the design visit.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

What it costs

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The internal fittings
  • Parking near your home
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What to send when you contact us

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll typically ask about:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Any ideas or images you have saved

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form. The written quote follows the visit.

Questions we’re often asked

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Can built-in shelves be adjustable?

Some or all of them can be adjustable. A few fixed shelves keep the bookcase rigid, with adjustable ones in between.

How long will the fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

The furniture is built in sections. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
