Our walk-in wardrobes across Southwark
Drawers, shelves and shoe storage make a walk-in wardrobe work day to day. Folded knitwear sits well on shelves, smaller things go in drawers and shoes can have racks or shelves of their own. A dressing table with a mirror can be built in where there’s space. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about setting aside a corner of a large bedroom and turning a box room into a dressing room.
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- First, you let us know about the space and how you dress. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
- At the design visit we measure the room and talk through hanging, shelves and drawers.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
- We build the carcasses, drawers and shelves in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring everything to your home and fit it to the room.
Quotes in Southwark
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Bedroom storage across Southwark
Across Southwark, from East Dulwich, Herne Hill and Bermondsey outwards, we design and fit walk-in wardrobes. On an external wall, ventilation is designed in to help keep condensation away. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whatever it’s made of.
About 28% of the homes in Southwark went up since 2000, and about 26% before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. A quarter or more of the homes in Southwark (about 28%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board. Purpose-built flats are home to about 64% of households in Southwark, the 2021 Census shows. For a flat, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
We cover the whole of London, so homes in Southwark are well within our area. Let us know about access and parking when you first get in touch.
East Dulwich: If you live near Brunswick Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If you live in a period home close to The Latter Rain Outpouring Revival Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.
What it costs
Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- How big the furniture is
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Parking near your home
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It’s useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.
Helping us understand the room
Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
What it’s made from
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes and shelves. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
Spray-painted finish
You choose the colour, and we apply it in the workshop.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf wardrobe systems are quicker to get and typically cost less, and in a square room they can work. Where walls lean and floors slope, they rarely fit neatly. A bespoke walk-in wardrobe is made to the room.
What to check before you book
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
Do you need walk-in wardrobes?
Some homes have a small room that never quite earns its keep. Turning it into a dressing room can make better use of it instead of a store for odds and ends.
Here’s what walk-in wardrobes can help with:
- More space for clothes and shoes
- A walk-in wardrobe in a box room
- Moving wardrobes out of the bedroom
- Separate space for two people’s clothes
Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Southwark
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not usually. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Should a walk-in wardrobe have doors?
Either works. Doors give a tidy look and help keep dust away, and open storage makes things quick to find. A mix of the two is common.
How much time does fitting need?
The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. We cannot advise on leases, so please check yours.
Do I get to choose the colour?
The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.
