Built-in bookshelves in Southwark: how it works
A built-in bookcase is shelving made for one wall, one alcove or one room. It can run wall to wall and up to the ceiling. For a home in Southwark, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through your books. Most enquiries start with somewhere to keep toys and books tidy and bare walls that could hold shelving, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You send us a few details about the room and what the shelves will hold.
- We come to measure, look at how the wall is built and agree the layout.
- Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took.
- The shelving is fitted in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.
What goes into your quote
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Starting with a design visit
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Living-room carpentry across Southwark
We make built-in bookshelves for homes across Southwark, in East Dulwich, Herne Hill and Bermondsey and beyond. The walls behind built-in bookshelves vary with the age of the home, so fixings are checked at the measuring visit. Shelf spans and depths are chosen so nothing bows.
About 28% of the homes in Southwark went up since 2000, and about 26% before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. A quarter or more of the homes in Southwark (about 28%) were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Newer homes usually have plasterboard stud walls and open-plan rooms, often with no chimney breast, so the fixings go into the studs, or heavier pieces stand on the floor. About 64% of households in Southwark live in purpose-built flats, according to Census 2021. For a flat, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping.
East Dulwich: Kingswood House, about 2.2 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. If you live near Brunswick Park, built-in bookshelves can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.
Caring for painted furniture
A little care keeps the finish looking good. These practical tips help:
- Let us know about access early
- Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
- Note the sizes of your largest books and records
- Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting
Keep a record of the colour so any touch-ups match. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.
Don’t load shelves beyond what they were planned for. If you plan to add a heavy collection later, say so at the measuring visit, so we can allow for it.
What it costs
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Spray painting or hand painting
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.
Helping us understand the room
To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- What the furniture needs to hold
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, message us from the contact page with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
A row of standard bookcases rarely fills a wall, and against an uneven wall the gaps are obvious. Built-in shelves are scribed to the walls and run to the ceiling if you want.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
Flats, leases and landlords
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Southwark
Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, message us from the contact page.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
Do you work outside London?
No. Our work is in London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.
What happens if there’s a radiator where I want shelves?
It can be done, but it needs careful planning. The heat has to rise and move into the room, so we plan an opening or gap and never box it in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.
How long will the fitting take?
The time on site depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.
Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Southwark?
Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, Southwark included.
