Bespoke kitchens in Southwark: how it works

We make kitchens for homes in Southwark and across London. It starts with a design visit to measure and discuss the layout, then a written quote. Once agreed, the kitchen is made at our workshop and fitted in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Most enquiries start with a kitchen for a room that isn’t square and spaces sized for your oven and fridge; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You contact us about a bespoke kitchen.
  2. At the design visit we plan the kitchen and talk about colours and finish.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish agreed.
  4. We make the kitchen in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which suits kitchens and takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied on site and is easy to touch up later.
  6. Treat new paint gently while it cures; the plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your own plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.

What goes into your quote

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Bespoke kitchens for homes across Southwark

From East Dulwich, Herne Hill and Bermondsey to the quieter streets, kitchens across Southwark range from narrow galleys to open-plan rooms. Cabinets are made for the room you have, with the worktop, sink and appliances you choose.

In Southwark, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 28%) and before 1919 (about 26%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. About 28% of homes in Southwark were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Kitchens in homes built since 2000 are often open-plan, with stud walls, so the cabinet fixings are chosen for the board. About 64% of households in Southwark live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules, so we plan access to your home in Southwark ahead of fitting day.

East Dulwich: For a flat near East Dulwich station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Champion Lodge, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

What prompts bespoke kitchens

In many older homes, ready-made units struggle with lean and slope. Cabinets end up with gaps or tilted lines, while scribed and levelled cabinets keep the lines true.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A central island in a larger kitchen
  • A painted kitchen in a colour you choose
  • A larder for food and small appliances
  • A kitchen planned around your appliances

Flats, leases and landlords

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

Tips worth knowing

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Make sure an island won’t crowd the room
  • Share the layout with your other trades
  • Have damp sorted before fitting

The appliances you’ve chosen come with their own care instructions, and the worktop you chose will have its own care advice too.

Line up your other trades in good time. Their work and ours need to fit together, so it helps if everyone knows the plan.

Boards, parts and paint

Doors and drawer fronts

Door style makes a big difference to the look, whether plain or framed.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF suits kitchens, because it copes with a room that gets warm and steamy.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Questions from Southwark

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Which worktops and appliances can I have?

The cabinets are designed for the worktop, sink and appliances you have picked. It helps to choose them before the design is final, and the quote confirms what’s included.

Is there room for an island in my kitchen?

Where space allows, yes. There has to be comfortable space on every side, and we check this at the measuring visit. If the room is narrow, we will suggest other layouts.

Do you handle the gas and electrics for the kitchen?

No. We’re carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and electrics by your electrician, and we plan the cabinets around their work.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
