Walk-in wardrobes across Ealing: what to expect

Hanging space is the heart of most walk-in wardrobes. Long hanging suits coats and dresses, while double hanging, one rail above another, fits shirts and jackets into half the height. The balance of long and double hanging is based on your clothes. Most enquiries start with a built-in dressing table and shelves for shoes and bags; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. We start with the room you have in mind and what needs a home.
  2. We visit, measure up and plan the layout with you.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. The units are built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The units are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls.

What goes into your quote

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Walk-in wardrobes for homes across Ealing

We make walk-in wardrobes for homes across Ealing, in Acton, Southall and Greenford and beyond. On an external wall, ventilation is designed in to help keep condensation away. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whatever it is made of.

About 30% of the homes in Ealing went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 28% before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Around a third of the homes in Ealing (about 30%) date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. 4 of the 19 places in Ealing with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.

In London, the route into a home matters as much as the room, so the way in is measured along with the room.

Ealing: For an older house near St Saviour's Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. Near listed buildings like Pitzhanger Manor House, less than half a mile east of the centre of Ealing, older homes may keep original joinery that walk-in wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Practical tips

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Consider a mix of doors and open shelves
  • Measure how much long hanging you need
  • Know what you’ll keep before planning
  • Have damp sorted before fitting

Keep the room ventilated, particularly on a cooler external wall. Avoid packing clothes tight against the back of the units to help air move.

If you want a partition to create the walk-in wardrobe, talk to a builder first. We make and fit the units inside.

What it costs

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The overall size of the piece

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

Getting in touch

When you contact us, these help most:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Materials and finishes

Hanging rails

Full-length hanging suits coats and long garments, with double hanging elsewhere.

Hand-painted finish

If you’d like the units to match the room’s woodwork, hand painting on site works well.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf wardrobe systems are quicker to get and typically cost less, and in a simple room they may suit. In an older room with uneven walls and a sloping floor, they leave gaps. Ours is built to the room’s real shape.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?

Your questions about walk-in wardrobes in Ealing

What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Is ventilation important in a dressing room?

Yes. A room full of clothes needs air moving through it, particularly against a cooler external wall. The units are designed with ventilation in mind.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

We plan the route in at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Is it better to have doors or open storage?

It is your choice. Doors keep dust off and give a calm, finished look, and open storage makes things quick to find. Many people choose a mix.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can you build a dressing area in my bedroom?

Yes. A run of units can define a dressing area, and we fit the furniture once any building work is done.
