How we make TV and media units for Ealing
A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, behind the screen or inside a cupboard. That is work for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. Ideally it’s done before the unit goes in, and we can tell you where the unit will sit. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are leads that show from every angle and speakers muffled behind doors.
In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
- We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go.
- We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
- We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment.
How our quotes work
Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.
Why work with us
- Every quote follows a design visit
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
- Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
- Made for your room, not a standard size
Starting with a design visit
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you are ready, fill in our short enquiry form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Living-room carpentry across Ealing
Across Ealing, from Acton, Southall and Greenford outwards, we design and fit TV and media units. The walls behind TV and media units vary with the age of the home, so fixings are checked at the design visit. Shelf spans and depths are chosen so nothing bows.
The biggest shares of homes in Ealing were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 30%) and before 1919 (about 28%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. About 30% of homes in Ealing date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, and TV and media units are planned around both. 4 of the 19 places in Ealing with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.
Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping, so we plan access to your home in Ealing ahead of fitting day.
Ealing: For a family home near Ealing Independent College, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If your home is one of the older houses near St Saviour's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Bought units come in the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- How parking will work on your street
- Whether they measure the room themselves
What we don’t do
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
- Painting the walls and ceiling
- Connecting and setting up your equipment
What affects the price in Ealing
Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Parking near your home
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
Before the design visit
To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
To get a quote, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.
Flats, conversions and lettings
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check during the design visit.
Caring for painted furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Think about the viewing height from your sofa
- Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
- Find out how much space each box needs around it
- Count your equipment, including routers and consoles
When you change equipment, use the cable routes we planned rather than drilling new holes. It keeps the unit tidy.
Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear when you add equipment.
Questions from Ealing
Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?
The unit can be planned either way. For a wall-mounted TV, the layout works around the bracket position, and if it stands on the unit we size the top for it.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
How long will the fitting take?
The time on site depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
