How we make built-in bookshelves for Kensington and Chelsea

A shelf’s strength depends on its span, its depth and its load. For a long shelf of books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support part way. We often use birch plywood, which is stiff and strong. Most enquiries start with shelves packed two rows deep and bookcases that lean or wobble, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.

How our quotes work

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It is useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so it can be planned.

Why work with us

Starting with a design visit

To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a quote in writing follows.

Living-room carpentry across Kensington and Chelsea

We make built-in bookshelves for homes across Kensington and Chelsea, in Kensington, Brompton and Chelsea and beyond. Walls could be solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so fixings are chosen for each. Shelf spans and depths are chosen so nothing bows.

In Kensington and Chelsea, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 66%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 10%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. More than half of the homes in Kensington and Chelsea (about 66%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Alcoves either side of a chimney breast and tall ceilings make older houses natural homes for built-in shelving. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 25% of households in Kensington and Chelsea, based on Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Our area covers the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City, Kensington and Chelsea included. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and go through the design.

Kensington: Near listed buildings like The Tower House, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Kensington, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Leighton House, about 0.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

What we do not do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Plumbing work around the shelves
  • Knocking through or altering walls
  • Making good walls that cannot take fixings

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
  • Check the heights of art books, files and records
  • Let us know where the heaviest things will go
  • Think about whether the spacing needs to change later

On an outside wall, do not pack books tight against the back, to help avoid condensation. Watch for any musty smell or marks.

Watch for damp marks on external walls behind the shelves. The cause is a job for the right trade, and it’s easier to deal with before it spreads.

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them straight away. They also come with you when you move. Built-in shelves stay with the house and are made for its walls.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

Questions from Kensington and Chelsea

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Kensington and Chelsea?

Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, Kensington and Chelsea included.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. We cover London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?

We check how the wall is built during the design visit. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy bookcases are fixed to sound parts of the wall. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.

Will you paint the walls around the furniture?

No. We do not plaster or decorate, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.

Do you work for landlords and letting agents?

Yes. The process is the same: a design visit, a written quote, then the furniture is made and fitted. Access can be arranged through the letting agent.
