How we make built-in bookshelves for Hounslow

A shelf’s strength depends on its span, its depth and its load. For a long shelf of books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support part way, or the run is split into shorter bays. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat. We make built-in bookshelves from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are room for a record collection and books piled on the floor.

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves will not sag.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.

How our quotes work

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Built-in bookshelves across Hounslow: local notes

Across Hounslow, a living room might be a double reception room in a terrace or a single open-plan space in a block. Built-in bookshelves can take on either, from a pair of alcoves to a full wall. You choose the colour, and whether it’s sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand.

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 29% of the housing in Hounslow, with about 20% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. A quarter or more of the homes in Hounslow (about 29%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Interwar front rooms typically have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, and built-in bookshelves are planned around both. 11 of the 25 places in Hounslow with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.

Getting furniture into a London home takes planning, from narrow halls to lifts and parking, so the way in is measured along with the room.

Hounslow: Near listed buildings like Worton Hall, less than half a mile south-east of the centre of Hounslow, older homes may keep original joinery that built-in bookshelves can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. Close to Inwood Park? Built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

How we price built-in bookshelves

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Parking and unloading on your street

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What we need to know

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Bespoke built-in bookshelves or ready-made?

A row of standard bookcases rarely fills a wall, and on a wall that isn’t straight the gaps show. Built-in shelves are scribed to the walls and run to the ceiling if you want.

What to check before you book

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • How parking will work on your street
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

What it’s made from

Birch plywood

For carcasses and fixed shelves, birch plywood gives a rigid frame.

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth raises the shelving and hides a sloping floor. It can line up with the skirting.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising at the design visit.

Do you need built-in bookshelves?

Records, large art books and collections need shelves sized for them. Off-the-shelf bookcases seldom have the right depth, and that is where bespoke shelving helps.

People typically get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • Shelves deep enough for large books
  • Shelves that sag under books
  • Shelving that frames a window
  • Empty alcoves that could hold books

Questions we’re often asked

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We’ll design around them.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Can landlords use you for a rented flat?

Yes. We make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let as well as for homeowners. We will need access agreed with any tenants.

Can shelves go around a radiator?

It is possible with some thought. Heat needs space to escape, so we leave a gap or open front rather than boxing the radiator in. Often the better answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or have your plumber move it.

Are heavy bookshelves safe on any wall?

That depends on how the wall is built. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall, into sound brick or studs. Where a wall cannot take the load, we will say so.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. Our work is in London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.
