Alcove Units across Hounslow

How we make alcove units for Hounslow

In a tall room, a full-height alcove cupboard holds a great deal. In a bedroom, it can become a small wardrobe or a linen cupboard, while in a dining room it can keep china, glass and table linen. We ask what you want to store before we plan the inside, so shelves and rails go where they’re needed. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are bare alcoves beside the fireplace and clutter with nowhere to go.

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You send us some details about the alcoves and what you’d like in them.
  2. We come to measure the alcoves, look at the walls and agree the design with you, checking how far the walls are out of square.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the units, materials and finish.
  4. The units are built in our workshop.
  5. We install the units, set them level and scribe them to the alcoves.

What goes into your quote

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Getting a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, use our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Alcove units across Hounslow: local notes

Some living rooms across Hounslow are long knocked-through rooms; others are compact flats where one wall has to hold everything. Either way, alcove units are planned around how the room is used day to day. The finish is agreed with you, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 29% of the housing in Hounslow, with about 20% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. A quarter or more of the homes in Hounslow (about 29%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Interwar front rooms typically have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, and alcove units are planned around both. Of the 25 places we have local pages for in Hounslow, 11 have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.

Controlled parking zones cover large parts of London, and depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking during the design visit.

Hounslow: If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Mary the Virgin, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Living in a block of flats near Hounslow station? Then alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

What it’s made from

Shelves

Shelf heights are planned around your things. A shallower top shelf can keep things within reach.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting is done in the workshop, giving a smooth, even, factory-like surface. It suits a crisp, modern look as well as a classic one.

What it costs

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • Parking near your home
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Helping us understand the room

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Any ideas or images you have saved

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Honest limits

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Removing or altering a chimney breast, which is structural work
  • Plastering or repairing loose plaster in the alcoves
  • Electrical work, like new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

Is bespoke worth it?

The depth of an alcove is set by the chimney breast. A shop-bought cabinet may stick out past the chimney breast or leave a deep gap behind it. We set the depth to suit the room, flush with the chimney breast or set back from it.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

Common questions about alcove units

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Do you work in Hounslow?

Yes, we do. We work across Hounslow, and the process is the same everywhere we go.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can the two alcove units be different?

That depends on how you use the room. Alcoves are often different widths anyway. They can match in style while doing different jobs.

How long are you in the house for the fitting?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Most of the making happens in our workshop, so the work in your home is about fitting and finishing.

Is the furniture made to order?

Everything is made at our workshop for your room, then brought to your home and fitted. It is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
