Fitted wardrobes in Hammersmith and Fulham: how it works

Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in a colour agreed with you. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Most enquiries start with not enough hanging space and standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote.

  1. You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

What goes into your quote

Fitted wardrobes across Hammersmith and Fulham: local notes

If your bedroom in Hammersmith and Fulham has a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for storage. In rooms without one, a full wall of storage often works best. Either way, each piece is fitted to the walls and floor as they are.

About 56% of the homes in Hammersmith and Fulham went up before 1919, and about 16% since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. About 56% of homes in Hammersmith and Fulham were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Older bedrooms usually have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use. About 26% of households in Hammersmith and Fulham live in flats in converted or shared houses, the 2021 Census shows. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

We make fitted furniture for every kind of home in Hammersmith and Fulham, from Victorian terraces to new-build flats. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.

Fulham: If you live in a flat close to West Brompton station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. For a family home near St Johns Walham Green Church of England Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Do you need fitted wardrobes?

Sometimes it’s a change in how a room is used. Fitted wardrobes give it proper storage without crowding the floor. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.

Fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall

When you need someone else

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
  • Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space

Tips worth knowing

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Let us know which walls face outside
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations

Leave a little space between clothes and the back of the wardrobe where the wardrobe sits on an outside wall. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.

Let doors close gently rather than slamming. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Standalone wardrobes cost less to buy and can come with you when you move. That’s a real advantage if you are renting or moving soon. Fitted wardrobes stay with the room.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

Flats, conversions and lettings

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit.

Questions we are often asked

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that’s often wasted. We measure the bed and the room during the design visit.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. We shape the wardrobe to follow the slope, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It turns awkward space into storage.

Will you paint the walls around the furniture?

No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.

How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?

Each wardrobe is built in sections that suit the stairs, landings and lift. Let us know about any concierge or lift booking rules.

Where is the furniture made?

It is made at our workshop, to the design and sizes agreed after the design visit. After that, we fit it in your home.

How long will the fitting take?

It depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
