How we make TV and media units for Hammersmith and Fulham
Speakers need their own thought. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen, while larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Speakers work best in the open rather than behind closed doors, so we leave open bays for them. Most enquiries start with speakers muffled behind doors and bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
- We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
- Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
- We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
- We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.

Living-room carpentry across Hammersmith and Fulham
Most people in Hammersmith and Fulham who ask about TV and media units want somewhere for books, the TV and the things that pile up. One design can bring those together, made in our workshop and then fitted.
In Hammersmith and Fulham, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 56%) and the years since 2000 (about 16%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. About 56% of homes in Hammersmith and Fulham were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Older houses usually have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit a TV in the middle and media storage either side, with cable routes and ventilation planned in. About 26% of households in Hammersmith and Fulham live in flats in converted or shared houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.
We make fitted furniture for every kind of home in Hammersmith and Fulham, from Victorian terraces to new-build flats. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.
Fulham: Fulham Palace, about 0.7 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. If you live in a flat close to West Brompton station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Could you do it yourself?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Honest limits
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:
- Removing a chimney breast or any structural work
- Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
- Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
What it is made from
Birch plywood
A wide shelf under the TV needs stiffness. Birch plywood helps.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting often suits units in older houses. The colour is agreed with you.
Flats, conversions and lettings
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.
Do you need TV and media units?
In an open-plan space, the TV wall is on show from everywhere. A built-in unit gives that wall order.
We’re often asked to help with:
- Cables trailing across the wall
- Space for a soundbar and speakers
- Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
- A big screen that dominates the wall
Questions we are often asked
How long will the fitting take?
It depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The making happens in our workshop.
What are your TV and media units made from?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Who chooses the colour?
The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.
Do you work for landlords and letting agents?
Yes. Landlords and letting agents can arrange a design visit in the same way as anyone else. Access has to be agreed with the tenants.
