Our walk-in wardrobes across Hammersmith and Fulham

Drawers, shelves and shoe storage make a walk-in wardrobe work day to day. Folded knitwear sits well on shelves, while drawers hold smaller things and shoes get shelving of their own. If the room allows, we can include a dressing table. Most enquiries start with separate space for two people’s clothes and setting aside a corner of a large bedroom, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. We visit to plan the room and measure the way in, including stairs, landings and doorways. It helps to mention parking then, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. The units are brought in, assembled and set level. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

How our quotes work

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Bedroom storage across Hammersmith and Fulham

Homes across Hammersmith and Fulham, Fulham, Parsons Green and Walham Green among them, often have one bedroom that has to do two jobs. Walk-in wardrobes can be planned so the room switches between them.

In Hammersmith and Fulham, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 56%) and the years since 2000 (about 16%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for walk-in wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. More than half of the homes in Hammersmith and Fulham (about 56%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. A small spare room in an older house can make a good dressing room, with storage scribed to walls that wander. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 26% of households in Hammersmith and Fulham, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping.

Fulham: The wider area includes historic houses such as Fulham Palace, about 0.7 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For a family home near St Johns Walham Green Church of England Primary School, the inside of walk-in wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Where other trades come in

Not everything around walk-in wardrobes is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Making good walls and ceilings
  • Structural changes or removing walls
  • Electrical work in the room

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

We make doors in a style that suits the room and finish them to match. Some areas can be left open.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting in the room lets the units match the doors and skirting.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

Bespoke walk-in wardrobes or ready-made?

Open rail systems are simple and adaptable, which suits some people well. A fitted walk-in wardrobe adds doors, drawers and shelves where you want them, in a finish that suits the house.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

Questions from Hammersmith and Fulham

How long does fitting take?

It depends on the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you’ll know before we start.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on your lease, so it is worth checking before fitting day.

Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?

Either works. Doors keep dust off and give a calm, finished look, while open rails and shelves let you see everything. Many people choose a mix.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.
