Window seats in Hammersmith and Fulham: how it works

A seat under a bedroom or nursery window can store toys, bedding or books. With deep drawers or a lift-up lid, it becomes useful storage as well as a place to sit. For children’s rooms, drawers are often easier for small hands than a heavy lid. In Hammersmith and Fulham, the design visit is where the details are settled. We make window seats from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a recess under the window doing nothing and looking for a reading spot by the window.

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the bay or recess.
  2. At the design visit we measure each side of the bay, because walls in older houses are rarely square.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the angles we measured.
  5. On fitting day the seat is set level and scribed to follow the walls and floor.

What affects the price in Hammersmith and Fulham

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Window seats across Hammersmith and Fulham: local notes

We make window seats for homes across Hammersmith and Fulham, in Fulham, Parsons Green and Walham Green and beyond. Meters, fuse boards and boilers stay accessible, with the clearances their makers set out. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

About 56% of the homes in Hammersmith and Fulham went up before 1919, and about 16% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. More than half of the homes in Hammersmith and Fulham (about 56%) were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age, and they’re natural places for a window seat. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 26% of households in Hammersmith and Fulham, based on Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

Controlled parking zones cover large parts of London, and depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.

Fulham: Close to Parsons Green (park)? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place. For a flat near West Brompton station, window seats are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

What affects the price in Hammersmith and Fulham

What you pay depends on:

  • The internal fittings
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How square the room is

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Before the design visit

These details help when you contact us:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

What we do not do

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Painting the walls of the bay
  • Making the seat cushion, which isn’t our work
  • Plumbing work on the radiator under the window

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

Before and after fitting day

A little care keeps the finish looking good. These practical tips help:

  • Note whether your window has working shutters
  • Let us know about the radiator before we visit
  • Think about whether you’d like shelves either side
  • Decide on cushion thickness before the design visit

Before we leave, we check every lid and drawer with you. If there is a radiator grille, we make sure the radiator is clear and the grille is in place. That way, everything works as planned.

Check now and then that hinges and handles are tight. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If something stops working smoothly, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us.

Your questions about window seats in Hammersmith and Fulham

How is a window seat priced?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The size of the window, the storage and the finish all shape the price. For a quote, message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

How long is the fitting for a window seat?

How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We make the seat in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can you build a window seat over a radiator?

Yes. The seat has a grille or open front, so the warmth can reach the room. Space is left around the radiator too. Moving the radiator is for your plumber, if you’d prefer it elsewhere.
