About window seats in Enfield
A well-made window seat gives you a place to sit in the best light in the room. Our window seats are made for bays, sash windows and the recesses beside them, typically with storage below, under a lift-up lid or in drawers. In Enfield, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. Typical reasons to get in touch are a recess under the window doing nothing and looking for a reading spot by the window, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the bay or sash window is enough.
- At the design visit we measure the window and the radiator, and plan a grille or open front so heat is not trapped.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the seat and the grille.
- In our workshop the seat is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the grille made to match.
- We fit it in your home and scribe it to the walls, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Quotes in Enfield
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Window seats across Enfield: local notes
Across Enfield, the most useful storage is often hidden in an tricky corner. Window seats can follow the slope of a staircase or a ceiling, or the line of a bay. Everything is scribed and levelled on site.
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 35% of the housing in Enfield, with about 23% built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Around a third of the homes in Enfield (about 35%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Bay windows are a feature of many interwar houses, and they suit a seat with storage below. 26 of the 26 places in Enfield with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. The rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.
Our area covers the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City, Enfield included. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and talk through the design.
Edmonton: If you live in a period home close to All Saints' Church, window seats can be scribed to follow a bay that is rarely square. For a family home near Brettenham Primary School, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.
What prompts window seats
The most common reason is wanting to make more of a bay or window. A bay can be an awkward space for furniture, and a seat makes it part of the room. It gives you a place to sit in the light.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- A radiator that makes the space hard to use
- An empty bay that does not get used
- Wanting a quiet place to read
- A sash window with space beneath it going to waste
Is bespoke worth it?
One advantage of a standalone bench is that it can go with you. A fitted seat is designed to stay, and it uses the space in a way a standalone piece cannot. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
What we don’t do
We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:
- New sockets or lights near the window, which are for your electrician
- Plumbing work on the radiator under the window
- Painting the walls of the bay
What it’s made from
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish works well on grilles as well as flat fronts. It’s carried out in the workshop for an even coat. The colour is your choice.
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters. It suits the frame and the seat top, which take weight every day. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
What affects the cost of window seats
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- How square the room is
- Parking near your home
- The internal fittings
- How many doors and drawers there are
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
What to send when you contact us
You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Common questions about window seats
How long does it take to fit a window seat?
How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We make the seat in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need someone to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Can you build a window seat over a radiator?
Yes. We build a grille or an open front into the seat so the heat is not trapped. We also leave space around the radiator. Moving the radiator is for your plumber, if you’d prefer it elsewhere.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
Do you make the seat cushion too?
Cushions aren’t part of our work, though we make the seat to suit one. We plan the seat’s height and depth with a cushion in mind. We’ll give you the measurements.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Usually not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
