How we make TV and media units for Enfield
In many period living rooms, the chimney breast and its two alcoves shape the whole wall. Cupboards and shelves in the alcoves can hold the boxes, speakers and books, with the TV in one alcove or on the chimney breast. We keep any vent in the chimney breast clear. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room and a big screen that dominates the wall.
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind, including the size of the screen.
- We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it helps to have them in mind early.
- We send a written quote for the unit, ready for you to check.
- The unit is made at our workshop, with openings for cables and air.
- The unit is fitted in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.
What goes into your quote
Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.
What you get with us
- Designed for the room you have
- Scribed to uneven walls
- Finished by spray or by hand
- Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
Ask for a quote
Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Homes across Enfield and their living rooms
Some living rooms across Enfield are long knocked-through rooms; others are compact flats where one wall has to hold everything. TV and media units can take on either, from a pair of alcoves to a full wall. You choose the colour, and whether it is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand.
The biggest shares of homes in Enfield were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 35%) and before 1919 (about 23%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Around a third of the homes in Enfield (about 35%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Interwar front rooms normally have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, which shape where TV and media units go. 26 of the 26 places in Enfield with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.
Enfield is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. Tell us about access and parking when you first get in touch.
Edmonton: Living in a block of flats near Edmonton Green station? Then it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Close to Pymmes Park? TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.
What it is made from
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface that suits a modern TV wall.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it’s good for shelves that carry equipment and speakers.
When is bespoke worth it?
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit.
What we don’t do
It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
- Structural changes to the wall
- Connecting the TV signal or internet
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Standard units come in fixed sizes. A bespoke unit is scribed to the walls and can run to the ceiling.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
Common questions about TV and media units
What if I buy a larger TV?
The space can be sized for a larger TV, if you expect to upgrade. Tell us the size you might move to at the design visit.
Who moves the sockets for a built-in TV wall?
Electrical work is not something we do. Your electrician handles sockets and wiring. We tell you where the unit will sit so the sockets end up in the right place.
Will the cables be hidden?
Cable routes are built into the design, with access panels for later changes. Where cables reach the wall depends on the sockets, and your electrician can move them if needed.
Do you make good the walls afterwards?
No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
Do you make the furniture yourselves?
Everything is built in our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. It is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?
Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits. We give each box its own space and you can check the maker’s guidance on clearances.
Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?
The unit can be planned either way. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables or we size the top for a TV that stands on it.
