Walk-in wardrobes across the City of London: what to expect

You can have doors, open storage or a mix. Doors keep dust off and give a calm look, and open rails make it quick to find things. The choice is yours, and we’ll go through it when we measure. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about more space for clothes and shoes and a bedroom without crowded wardrobes.

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The walk-in wardrobe is fitted, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the inside fittings go in last.

Quotes in the City of London

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote, so you can take your time with it. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Homes across the City of London and their bedrooms

Across the City of London, including Smithfield, Barbican Estate and Bishopsgate, bedrooms come in every size. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. The inside layout is planned around your things.

About 40% of the homes in the City of London went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 27% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. More than a third of the homes in the City of London (about 40%) were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Post-war bedrooms are normally simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, with fixings chosen for concrete, block or brick. A quarter or more of the homes in the City of London (about 27%) were built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted furniture is fixed to suit the board.

We make fitted furniture for every kind of home in the City of London, from Victorian terraces to new-build flats. The process is the same wherever you are: a design visit, a quote in writing, then making and fitting.

City of London: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Lawrence Jewry, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a family home near Fashion Retail Academy, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Pricing walk-in wardrobes in the City of London

Several things affect the price:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Parking near your home

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What to send when you contact us

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

The problems walk-in wardrobes solve

The most common reason is simply running out of wardrobe space. Rails are crammed, shelves overflow and shoes end up under the bed. A dressing room spreads it all out so you can see it.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:

  • Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe
  • A bedroom without crowded wardrobes
  • Somewhere to sit and get ready
  • A use for a small spare room

Boards, parts and paint

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors can be flat, framed or panelled and finish them to match. You can mix doors with open storage.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Painted MDF doors look crisp and suit a calm, simple look.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

Questions from the City of London

Do you fit lighting in walk-in wardrobes?

No. Lighting and wiring are jobs for your electrician. We plan the units with their work in mind and talk it through when we measure.

What does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each walk-in wardrobe is different, so we quote once we’ve measured. To get started, message us from the contact page.

Is it better to have doors or open storage?

There’s no single right answer. Doors, open rails and shelves can all be combined, and we’ll talk it through at the design visit.

How long does fitting take?

Every room is different. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you will know before we start.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
