Our fitted home offices across the City of London

An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a neat desk with shelves above. We scribe the desk and shelving to the alcove walls, which are rarely straight. The opposite alcove can carry shelves or a cupboard to match. It gives a home in the City of London a workspace that looks part of the room. Typical reasons to get in touch are glare from a window on the screen and cables trailing across the desk and floor; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

  1. It starts when you get in touch with some details about the space, including the equipment you use.
  2. At the design visit we measure, look at the light and the sockets and plan the layout with you. New sockets are for your electrician, so it helps to think about them early.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The desk, shelving and cupboards are made at our workshop.
  5. The office is fitted in your home and checked, ready for work.

How our quotes work

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It is useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Getting a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Built-in desks and shelving across the City of London

The City of London has homes of every age, Smithfield, Barbican Estate and Bishopsgate included, and each suits a different kind of home office. The design visit is where we look at what would work.

The biggest shares of homes in the City of London were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 40%) and since 2000 (about 27%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. About 40% of homes in the City of London were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Post-war rooms are typically regular in shape, so a desk and shelving can run wall to wall. A quarter or more of the homes in the City of London (about 27%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. In homes built since 2000, the spare room is often small and has to do two jobs.

We make fitted furniture for every kind of home in the City of London, from Victorian terraces to new-build flats. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.

City of London: For an older house near St Olave Old Jewry, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. Close to St Alphage Garden? A desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.

What it costs

Several things affect the price:

  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The internal fittings
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The number of doors and drawers

Tricky rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

What to send when you get in touch

To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • How you want to use the space

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.

Is bespoke worth it?

For a plain desk on a flat wall, a ready-made option can do the job. Bespoke work makes sense in an alcove, under a slope, or where you want the desk, shelves and storage to work together. We will give you an honest view at the design visit.

What to check before you book

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

Could you do it yourself?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

What we don’t do

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Connecting printers and screens
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Building a loft conversion, which is not our work

Why people ask for fitted home offices in the City of London

Paperwork and files often have nowhere to go. Purpose-made storage gives files, books and stationery a home. The desk stays clear for work.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • A room with two jobs to do
  • No way to put work away
  • Files and folders piling up
  • A screen that is hard to read by the window

FAQs: fitted home offices in the City of London

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.

Which materials go into your home offices?

The office is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the desk, shelves and drawers, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Can a desk be fitted into an alcove?

In many homes, yes. An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a desk with shelves above. We scribe it to the walls, which are rarely straight in a period room. We will check the size during the design visit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
