Bespoke kitchens in the City of London: how it works

We often use moisture-resistant MDF in kitchens, because it stays stable and takes paint beautifully. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you. Most enquiries start with a layout for a small or awkward room and a central island in a larger kitchen, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the kitchen. Say a little about the way you cook.
  2. We visit, measure and go through the layout, larder, dresser or island, where space allows.
  3. You receive a written quote.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home, with plumbing, gas and electrics by your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician. It helps to have those trades booked in good time.

What goes into your quote

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Bespoke kitchens for homes across the City of London

Across the City of London, including Smithfield, Barbican Estate and Bishopsgate, kitchens come in every shape. The kitchen is designed for your room as it is, built around your chosen worktop, sink and appliances.

The biggest shares of homes in the City of London were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 40%) and since 2000 (about 27%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. More than a third of the homes in the City of London (about 40%) were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Post-war kitchens are often compact, so cabinets made to the room’s exact widths make the most of it. About 27% of homes in the City of London were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Newer homes typically have open-plan kitchens with plasterboard walls, so the cabinet fixings are chosen for the board.

Homes across the City of London range from period terraces to modern blocks, and we work in all of them. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.

City of London: The wider area includes historic houses like Mansion House, about 0.2 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. If you live in a flat close to London Cannon Street station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Could you do it yourself?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?

Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than ordering from a range. What you get is a kitchen planned around how you cook and live.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives a smooth surface for painted doors, in a kitchen as anywhere.

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the character of a hand-painted kitchen in an older home.

What it costs

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • How big the furniture is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What we need to know

To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in the City of London

Kitchens in older homes can be short on cupboard space. Larders, tall cupboards and deep drawers can hold much more without crowding the room.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Cabinets for a narrow kitchen
  • A central island in a larger kitchen
  • A kitchen that fits an uneven room
  • Tall larder storage

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

Is there room for an island in my kitchen?

Where space allows, yes. An island needs clear floor around it to open doors and move about, and we measure for it at the design visit. In a narrow kitchen, a longer run or a peninsula may suit better.

Do you work outside London?

No. We only take on work in London, across all the boroughs and the City of London.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Will you connect the sink and appliances?

No. We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by a Gas Safe engineer and electrics by your electrician, and we design around where their work goes.

Can landlords use you for a rented flat?

Yes. We make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let as well as for householders. Access has to be agreed with the tenants for the visit and for fitting day.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
