About TV and media units in Islington
Media equipment warms up as it runs, so equipment can’t simply be shut in a closed cupboard. We plan ventilation into the unit. It is worth checking each maker’s guidance on clearances. Most enquiries start with a screen at the wrong height and a tangle of wires behind the TV, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
- We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
- We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment.
What goes into your quote
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Living-room carpentry across Islington
Homes across Islington, Highbury, Farringdon and Clerkenwell included, have living rooms of every shape. The design for TV and media units includes cable routes and ventilation where there is a TV, with any new sockets left to your electrician. The carcasses are moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood.
The biggest shares of homes in Islington were built before 1919 (about 44%) and since 2000 (about 19%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. About 44% of homes in Islington were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. In houses of that age, the chimney breast often becomes the TV wall, with cupboards in the alcoves for set-top boxes and speakers. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 24% of households in Islington, the 2021 Census shows. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and Islington is part of that. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and discuss the design.
Highbury: If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. Living in a block of flats near Canonbury station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
Tips worth knowing
None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:
- Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
- Count your equipment, including routers and consoles
- Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf
- Tell us about parking and access during the design visit
When you change equipment, use the cable routes we planned instead of making new ones. It keeps the unit tidy.
Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
What it costs
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- The internal fittings
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
What we need to know
What helps most when you first contact us:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Do you need TV and media units?
In older living rooms, a TV can look out of place. A built-in unit around the chimney breast lets it sit more quietly, rather than the focus of it.
TV and media units can help with:
- Standard units leaving gaps
- A screen at the wrong height
- Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
- Leads that show from every angle
Materials and finishes
Plinths and scribe strips
The plinth raises the unit and hides a sloping floor. Its height can match the skirting board.
Spray-painted finish
The unit arrives already finished. Treat it gently while the paint cures fully.
Questions we are often asked
Is the furniture made to order?
Everything is made in our workshop for your room, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
How do I get a quote?
It is easiest to send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
Getting it in is planned at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Where should speakers go in a TV unit?
Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A shelf under the TV suits a soundbar with open bays for bigger speakers. Bring the sizes to the design visit.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
