Our fitted wardrobes across Barnet

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. We weigh them up with you during the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes and not enough hanging space.

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You describe the bedroom and the storage you need.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. Once you’re happy, the wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

What goes into your quote

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Tell us about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Arranging a design visit

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Near you in Finchley

In Finchley, that includes homes near Victoria Park, Woodhouse College and The Elephant Inn and the streets around them. Nearby too are St Paul's Finchley (under half a mile north-west), Francis Skaryna Belarusian Library and Museum (1.1 miles north), Manorside Primary School (close by, under half a mile north-east) and Bishop Douglass School (0.5 miles south). For rail, the closest station is New Southgate station, about 1.9 miles north-east. A little further out are Finchley Memorial Hospital (less than half a mile north-east) and Grand Arcade (1 mile north). For a walk, there’s Lakeside Nature Reserve.

Bedroom storage across Barnet

From Finchley, Burnt Oak and East Finchley to the quieter streets, bedrooms across Barnet range from box rooms to large rooms with bays. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. The inside layout is planned around your things.

In Barnet, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 34%) and before 1919 (about 20%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Around a third of the homes in Barnet (about 34%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. Of the 41 places we have local pages for in Barnet, 6 have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.

Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules.

Finchley: For families living near Manorside Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's Finchley, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

Do you need fitted wardrobes?

Sharing a bedroom means sharing the wardrobe. A fitted wardrobe can be planned with separate sections.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Too little room for clothes
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Before and after fitting day

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
  • Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them rather than packing one end. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail, so the rail stays straight.

Now and then, check that handles and hinges are tight and adjust any door that starts to catch.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Older homes rarely have straight walls or level floors. Standalone wardrobes may lean or leave uneven gaps against the wall. We set fitted wardrobes level and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Questions we are often asked

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do you work in Barnet?

Yes. We design and make fitted wardrobes for homes in Barnet.

Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings, and fitted wardrobes are one of the best ways to use them. The slope is measured during the design visit and the wardrobe scribed to it on site.

What if my bedroom floor isn’t level?

Uneven floors are normal in older homes. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors hang true.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
