Under-stairs storage in Barnet: how it works
Under-stairs cupboards often hold a gas meter, an electricity meter or the fuse board. They need to stay accessible, so readings and safety checks can still be made. We plan the storage around them, typically with a door that leaves them in clear reach, so you gain storage without losing access. If you are not sure what’s under your stairs in Barnet, we will look when we visit. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall and a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go.
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the space and what it holds now is plenty.
- At the design visit we measure the space and plan the storage around the meters, so readers and engineers can still reach them.
- A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
- The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.
How our quotes work
Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.
Why work with us
- Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- A design visit, then a written quote
- Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
- Built around your room
Getting a quote
We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Under-stairs storage across Barnet: local notes
Under the stairs, in the eaves, along a narrow hall or in a bay: homes across Barnet have lots of spaces that standard furniture can’t use. Under-stairs cupboards are drawn up for the space you have.
About 34% of the homes in Barnet went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 20% before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. About 34% of homes in Barnet date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. In many interwar houses the space under the stairs holds the meters or the fuse board, so the design keeps them reachable. 6 of the 41 places in Barnet with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.
Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules, so access to homes in Barnet is planned ahead of time.
Finchley: For families living near Manorside Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. For a flat near New Southgate station, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
Honest limits
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:
- Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
- Changing where a meter sits, which isn’t carpentry
- Altering or cutting into the stairs
Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?
If you only need a hook or two and a basic shelf, an off-the-shelf option may be enough. Bespoke work earns its place when you want to use the whole space, from the tall end to the lowest corner. We are happy to talk through which suits you at the design visit.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
We use moisture-resistant MDF because it stays stable and gives a smooth surface for paint. It suits the doors, drawer fronts and panels of an under-stairs cupboard, where the finish is most on show.
Pull-out drawers
Pull-out drawers bring the deep, low end of the space within reach. Each one is sized for what it will hold. A set of drawers can step down to follow the line of the stairs.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.
Caring for painted furniture
A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:
- Check whether your meters or fuse board are under the stairs
- Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
- Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well
- Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit
Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep tape, sharp knocks and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.
Damp coats and shoes put moisture into a closed space. Let them dry before they go away, and leave the door open for a while after a wet day if the cupboard feels damp.
Questions we’re often asked
Should I choose drawers or cupboards under the stairs?
The answer depends on your stairs and what you’ll keep there. Pull-out drawers suit the low, deep end, as they bring the back within reach. At the tall end, a cupboard is often better for coats and the vacuum.
What does an under-stairs cupboard cost?
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The mix of drawers, doors and shelves, and the finish you choose, all play a part. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
Where is the furniture made?
We make it in our workshop, to the design and sizes agreed after the design visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.
Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?
Often, yes, where the space opens onto a room and there’s enough height at one end. A built-in desk with shelves above and drawers below can work well. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.
Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?
Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.
Should I send pictures?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
