Wall beds in Hillingdon: how it works

You need room in front of the cabinet to lower the bed, and that shapes the design. We think about where a chair, rug or desk will go, so the bed can come down without a shuffle. Most enquiries start with more floor space in a studio flat and somewhere comfortable for guests to sleep, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, from the front door to the room itself. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinet is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. The cabinet is joined in the room, fixed securely and set level.

What affects the price in Hillingdon

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Bedroom storage across Hillingdon

Across Hillingdon, bedrooms range from period rooms with high ceilings to compact rooms in newer blocks. Wall beds are drawn up to suit the room you actually have.

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 37% of the housing in Hillingdon, with about 25% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. About 37% of homes in Hillingdon date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. About 25% of homes in Hillingdon were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Post-war bedrooms are typically simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, with fixings chosen for concrete, block or brick.

The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules.

Ruislip: For a flat near West Ruislip station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Near listed buildings like Lady Bankes School, less than half a mile south of the centre of Ruislip, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Where other trades come in

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • Choosing a mattress for you
  • Structural work to the wall or floor

What prompts wall beds

Some want a room that can change as the family does. A playroom, a study or a hobby room can still have a bed for visitors when it’s needed.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • A guest bed that disappears in the day
  • A proper bed instead of a sofa bed
  • More floor space in a studio flat
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests

Looking after your furniture

Getting the most from wall beds starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Let us know about the wall’s construction
  • Keep children away while the bed moves
  • Clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth
  • Think about how often the bed will be used

The mechanism maker’s guidance says how much bedding can stay on the bed when it folds away. We can build a cupboard beside the bed for extra bedding.

Consider how often the bed will be used and by whom. That helps decide its size and the mechanism, and whether a desk or shelves go around it.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

If you’d like the bed to match the skirting or doors, hand painting works well.

Spray-painted finish

We spray paint in the workshop for a smooth, factory-like finish.

Pricing wall beds in Hillingdon

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Parking near your home
  • The width and height of the space

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, and the quote follows.

Before the design visit

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Common questions about wall beds

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. We only take on work in London, across all the boroughs and the City of London.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

The mattress needs to suit the mechanism, including its size, depth and weight. We can talk you through what the mechanism allows, so the mattress you choose fits.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

It is made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route as well as the room.

How much does a wall bed cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The bed size, the cabinet and any storage around it all make a difference. For a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Can a wall bed go on any wall?

We check that at the design visit. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.
