Walk-in wardrobes in Greenwich: how it works

You can have doors, open storage or a mix. Doors give a tidy, finished look and help keep dust away, while open storage lets you see everything at once. The choice is yours, and we will go through it when we measure. Typical reasons to get in touch are a walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom and a dressing table with drawers and a mirror; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the room and what it needs to store is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan hanging lengths, shelves, drawers and shoe storage with you.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

What goes into your quote

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Walk-in wardrobes across Greenwich: local notes

Homes across Greenwich, Plumstead, Eltham and Woolwich among them, often have one bedroom that has to do two jobs. The design can help one room work two ways.

About 26% of the homes in Greenwich went up since 2000, and about 22% before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. A quarter or more of the homes in Greenwich (about 26%) were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs. Purpose-built flats are home to about 43% of households in Greenwich, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, walk-in wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Controlled parking zones cover large parts of London, so a van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges. Let us know about parking at the design visit.

Plumstead: If your children go to South Rise Primary School or a school nearby, walk-in wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. For an older house near St John's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where walk-in wardrobes go.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Drawer boxes take daily use, so we make them strong.

Hanging rails

Hanging rails can be set for long or double hanging to suit your clothes.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Is bespoke worth it?

Open rail systems are simple and adaptable, and that has real appeal. A fitted walk-in wardrobe adds doors, drawers and shelves where you want them, painted to match the room.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

What we do not do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Painting the walls of the room
  • Advice on your lease
  • Damp treatment or repairs

Before and after fitting day

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Consider a mix of doors and open shelves
  • Let air move through the space
  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Line up your electrician for any new lights

New paintwork takes a while to harden after fitting. Go easy on painted surfaces at first, and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth.

Deal with any damp before the units go in. Cooler external walls can lead to condensation, so we allow for ventilation.

Questions from Greenwich

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them, message us from the contact page.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Can a walk-in wardrobe be part of a bedroom?

Yes, where the room is large enough. One end or a corner can be set aside with a run of units, open or behind doors. A new partition wall is building work, so that’s for your builder.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route along with the room itself. At the design visit, we measure the route as well as the room.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

How are walk-in wardrobes priced?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The size of the room, the layout and the finish all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.
