Our TV and media units across Greenwich

In many period living rooms, the chimney breast and its two alcoves shape the whole wall. Cupboards and shelves in the alcoves can hold the boxes, speakers and books. Any chimney vent is kept clear. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste and boxes and consoles on the floor.

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the unit in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

What affects the price in Greenwich

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit, and the quote follows.

TV and media units for homes across Greenwich

Homes across Greenwich, Plumstead, Eltham and Woolwich included, have living rooms of every shape. The design for TV and media units includes cable routes and ventilation where there’s a TV, with any new sockets left to your electrician. The carcasses are moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood.

Homes built since 2000 make up about 26% of the housing in Greenwich, with about 22% built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. A quarter or more of the homes in Greenwich (about 26%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Newer homes typically have plasterboard stud walls and open-plan rooms, often with no chimney breast, so TV and media units are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Purpose-built flats are home to about 43% of households in Greenwich, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Homes across Greenwich range from period terraces to modern blocks, and we work in all of them. The process is the same wherever you are: a design visit, a written quote, then making and fitting.

Plumstead: Close to Plumstead Common? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. Danson House, about 2.7 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

Spraying coats edges and corners evenly. You choose the colour at the design stage.

Doors and drawer fronts

Many remote controls need a clear view of the box.

What prompts TV and media units

Others are tired of furniture that doesn’t fit. Bought units seldom suit an alcove, a slope or an uneven wall, and that is where a bespoke unit helps.

People normally get in touch with us about things like these:

  • A TV stand that does not fit the wall
  • Leads that show from every angle
  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • Boxes with no ventilation

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

Bought media units are made in set widths. A bespoke unit is scribed to the walls and can run to the ceiling.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How parking will work on your street
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

When you need someone else

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
  • Connecting and setting up your equipment
  • Repairing plaster or redecorating

Common questions about TV and media units

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. We cover London only: every London borough and the City of London.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Where is the furniture made?

Everything is made in our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. It’s built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Do you do plastering or decorating?

No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
