Under-stairs storage in Wandsworth: how it works

Where the space under the stairs opens onto a room, a compact desk can fit beneath it. We can build a desk with shelves above and a drawer or two below. If you’d like a socket or a light, your electrician fits it and we plan the furniture around it. It’s worth talking through at the measuring visit in Wandsworth. Typical reasons to get in touch are cleaning things with no proper home and an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.

  1. You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
  2. At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
  5. We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it is in.

What affects the price in Wandsworth

Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.

Under-stairs storage for homes across Wandsworth

Older homes in Wandsworth often hide useful space behind tricky shapes. A stair void, a bay or an eaves slope can all take under-stairs cupboards built to their exact angles. Everything is scribed and levelled on site.

About 44% of the homes in Wandsworth went up before 1919, and about 21% since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. More than a third of the homes in Wandsworth (about 44%) were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Under the stairs in an older terrace is often where the meters or the fuse board are, so the design keeps them accessible. About 48% of households in Wandsworth live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

We cover the whole of London, so homes in Wandsworth are well within our area. Tell us about access and parking when you first get in touch.

Clapham Junction: Near listed buildings like Church of St Mark, less than half a mile south of the centre of Clapham Junction, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If your home is one of the older houses near Clapham Welsh Presbyterian Church, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

Pricing under-stairs storage in Wandsworth

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Your postcode and the borough

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you’re ready, drop us a line using the contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Is bespoke worth it?

Flat-pack furniture is designed to be easy to carry home and quick to assemble. Ours is designed for one staircase and made in our workshop to suit it, using birch plywood for strong drawer boxes and moisture-resistant MDF for painted fronts. Which suits you depends on how much you want from the space.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

Any access door for a meter can be made to look like the other fronts. It opens fully so the meter stays easy to read. The rest of the fronts can be doors, drawers or both.

Plinths and scribe strips

Walls are rarely flat and floors rarely level, in older homes particularly. Scribe strips and a plinth take up the difference. That keeps the lines neat all round.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Honest limits

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
  • Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out

Questions from Wandsworth

How long will the fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Drawers, doors and carcasses are all made in the workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?

Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it’s useful to be around at the end.

Do you work in Wandsworth?

Yes, we do. We work across Wandsworth, and the process is the same everywhere we go.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?

It depends on the height and how open the space is. We look at it at the measuring visit and tell you honestly whether it will work. Where it works, it makes a neat spot for a laptop and paperwork.
