About fitted wardrobes in Westminster

An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. Where a wardrobe goes on an external wall, we plan ventilation behind and inside it, which helps keep mould away. We use moisture-resistant MDF, which suits that position. Typical reasons to get in touch are clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and an awkward slope in a loft bedroom, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we will have talked about during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

What affects the price in Westminster

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What you get with us

  • Saturday work by arrangement
  • More than 300 projects completed
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Made for your room, not a standard size

Arranging a design visit

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Local landmarks in City of Westminster

In City of Westminster, that includes homes near LITE Regal International School, Royal Society of Medicine Library and Devonshire Arms, among other places. Also close by are Hyde Park (0.6 miles south-west), The St Marylebone CofE School (0.5 miles north), St Vincent's Catholic Primary School (a few minutes’ walk north) and St Mark's (less than half a mile south). There is a railway station in City of Westminster itself: Bond Street station. Nearby you will also find Fortius Clinic (close by, under half a mile north) and Kingly Court (0.6 miles east). Green spaces nearby include Serpentine.

Fitted wardrobes across Westminster: local notes

Across Westminster, including City of Westminster, Marylebone and Soho, bedrooms come in every size. Fitted wardrobes are made for the room you have, using the full height where it helps. The inside layout is planned around your things.

In Westminster, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 49%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. More than a third of the homes in Westminster (about 49%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Older bedrooms usually have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use, scribed to walls that are not straight. About 70% of households in Westminster live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Our area covers the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City, Westminster included. Wherever you are, the job starts with a design visit.

City of Westminster: If you live in a flat close to Bond Street station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Handel Hendrix House, about 0.3 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Where other trades come in

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes
  • Building work to create a loft room

What prompts fitted wardrobes

For some, it is about a calmer room. A single run of painted doors looks tidier than mixed furniture, and everything has a place behind it.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you, spray painted or hand painted. Bespoke work does take longer than buying from a shop, since there is a design visit, a quote and workshop time first.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Tips worth knowing

The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:

  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall beforehand
  • Let us know about any damp you have seen on bedroom walls

Painted doors feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, handle the doors with care and don’t scrub the surfaces.

Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe aren’t blocked, particularly on an external wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and have the cause looked at early.

Questions from Westminster

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent.

What happens during the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

What are your fitted wardrobes made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes, and the quote says which is used where.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

Each piece is built in our workshop for the room it is going into, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. We cover London only: every London borough and the City of London.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

Each wardrobe is built in sections that suit the stairs, landings and lift, then assembled in the bedroom. Let us know about any concierge or lift booking rules.
