Our built-in bookshelves across Westminster

The right depth depends on your books. Paperbacks need much less depth than hardbacks, art books or records. Deep shelves let small books disappear behind each other, while shallow ones leave large books overhanging. A common answer is deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower ones above. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are empty alcoves that could hold books and books piled on the floor.

In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and talk through shelf spans, depths and spacing so the shelves won’t sag.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
  5. We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.

How our quotes work

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry

  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • Saturday visits and fitting by prior arrangement
  • A design visit, then a quote in writing

Ask for a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Living-room carpentry across Westminster

Living rooms across Westminster vary a lot, from knocked-through period rooms to open-plan new builds. Built-in bookshelves are designed for the one you have, with cable routes and ventilation for any screen or set-top boxes planned in. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable.

The biggest shares of homes in Westminster were built before 1919 (about 49%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 49% of homes in Westminster were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses of that age usually have alcoves, tall ceilings and picture rails, all of which shelving can use, with shelves sized so they don’t sag under books. Purpose-built flats are home to about 70% of households in Westminster, according to Census 2021. For a flat, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and Westminster is part of that. Wherever you are, the job starts with a design visit.

City of Westminster: If you live in a period home close to St Mark's, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If your children go to St Vincent's Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Is bespoke worth it?

A row of standard bookcases rarely fills a wall, and against an uneven wall the gaps are obvious. Built-in shelves are scribed to the walls and run to the ceiling if you want.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

What we do not do

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Structural changes, such as taking out a chimney breast

What it costs

What you pay depends on:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Getting in touch

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Birch plywood carcasses make a rigid bookcase, and birch plywood grips its fixings well.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting lets you judge the colour in your own room. Scribed edges and joins are painted along with the rest.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

Questions from Westminster

Do you work for landlords and letting agents?

Yes. It works the same way as any job: design visit, written quote, workshop, fitting. Access can be arranged through the letting agent.

Is the furniture made to order?

Everything is built in our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?

Some or all of them can be adjustable. A few fixed shelves keep the bookcase rigid.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

It depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.
