Fitted furniture in Barking and Dagenham

About fitted wardrobes in Barking and Dagenham

In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. A pair of alcove wardrobes keeps the chimney breast as a feature. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are too little room for clothes and mismatched bedroom furniture.

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections built in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You describe the bedroom and the storage you need. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers, with your clothes in mind.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We then make the wardrobes in our workshop.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.

Quotes in Barking and Dagenham

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Fitted wardrobes across Barking and Dagenham: local notes

Bedrooms across Barking and Dagenham might have alcoves, sloping ceilings, bulkheads or none of these. Fitted wardrobes are scribed to the walls and levelled on site. The paint finish, spray-painted or hand-painted, is agreed with you.

The biggest shares of homes in Barking and Dagenham were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 50%) and since 2000 (about 20%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. More than a third of the homes in Barking and Dagenham (about 50%) date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. Terraced houses are home to about 42% of households in Barking and Dagenham, based on Census 2021. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, which suit fitted furniture.

In London, the route into a home matters as much as the room, so the way in is measured along with the room.

Barking: If your children go to Eastbury Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. The wider area includes historic houses like Eastbury Manor House, about 0.1 miles east. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How square the room is

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Helping us understand the room

Ahead of the design visit, we will usually ask about:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Before and after fitting day

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in

Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be reset on their track.

Now and then, check that handles and hinges are tight and adjust doors before a rub marks the paint.

What we don’t do

Before you plan the job, it is useful to know what we don’t do:

  • Electrical work, such as moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Decorating or plastering the room
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp

What it is made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

With no grain to show through, MDF gives a calm painted finish. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted wardrobes.

Doors and drawer fronts

Hinged doors suit rooms with space in front. In a narrow room, sliding doors save space, though only part of the inside is open at once.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Barking and Dagenham

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Is the furniture made to order?

We make it in our workshop, to the sizes taken at the measuring visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

How long the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. The wardrobe is shaped to the ceiling line, keeping hanging space at the tall end and drawers or shelves lower down. It makes good use of space that is hard to furnish.
